Who cares? A college kid played a joke on a bunch of people. I don't see what there is to get indignant about.

Manti Te’o’s beautiful fake girlfriend, the one whom he spent multiple hours on the phone with, was actually a man.
Milton Grimes, lawyer to Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, who is accused of creating the hoax, told the New York Daily News that it was a one-man show and that his client impersonated the voice of Lennay Kekua, the woman Te’o came to know as his beloved girlfriend.
“[Te’o] thought it was a female he was talking with,” Grimes told the Daily News. “It was Ronaiah as Lennay.”
Cue any and all Ace Ventura jokes.
Grimes, who is best known for representing Rodney King against the City of Los Angeles, said his client has yet to speak publicly about the hoax because of a new law the State of California enacted on Jan. 1 making it a crime to create a false identity online.
“This wasn’t a prank to make fun,” Grimes told The News. “It was establishing a communication with someone. ... It was a person with a troubled existence trying to reach out and communicate and have a relationship.”
Well, that solves everything.

One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

I'd love to see how this guy does on the Wonderlic.
Bright boy, this one.

He knew early on, or hoped it was a MAN, BABY.

I have a lot of experience with Samoans. They are only marginally smarter than Tongans, who are only marginally smarter than a great ape with down syndrome.

I think the phone records were going to reveal these two chatting it up all night, and this was the best story they could come up with.

I concur with Baff...I've known my share and well let's just say I don't believe there's any Nobel prize winners in that group. I was gonna say, "works for NASA" but then Bux works there so maybe that's not out of the question.

That's insulting. I have never had a fake girlfriend for that longShapecharge wrote:I concur with Baff...I've known my share and well let's just say I don't believe there's any Nobel prize winners in that group. My gigantic Samoan buddy wasn't dumb, but extremely impulsive and a borderline alcoholic with bad judgement. I could actually see this happening to him

Hey fucker, nobody asked you to chime in with your contrarian opinion. He probably wasn't 100 percent Samoan then.
Re: Notre Dame's Manti Te'o's dead girlfriend a hoax?
Seriously. He was probably a marquesian and thought Shaf was too stupid to know where he was from, so he said he was a Samoan.Shapecharge wrote:Hey fucker, nobody asked you to chime in with your contrarian opinion. He probably wasn't 100 percent Samoan then.

Re: Notre Dame's Manti Te'o's dead girlfriend a hoax?
I can appreciate a practical joke but chatting on the phone for over 500 hours oversteps those boundaries a bit.
That's the only story that even remotely makes sense here. In fact, even if he isn't gay, coming out would be the best move. People currently think that he is either an idiot or a loon and the MNC game didn't improve his draft stock anyway. If I were advising him, I would book Oprah and have him come out in tears. He would likely fall a few rounds but the Jets would pick him up and sponsors would have him among the 20 richest athletes in the game.
When his career washes up, he could tell the truth that his coming out was a lie and get another 15 minutes and things would be finished, according to prophecy.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... -manti-teoOne theory for the hoax is that Te'o was trying to cover up a homosexual relationship. Couric asked Te'o if he was gay.
"No, far from it," he said. "Faaaaarrrr from it."

That's pretty much what Bill Simmons and his readers said in his mailbag last Friday.
The only problem is that he then has to be a single, gay football player for a few seasons to a decade plus, or he has to pretend to be a homo with a beard of a boyfriend. Or is it a reverse beard? Do you call it a goatee when you have a fake boyfriend to make people believe you're gay when you're "just pretending"??
What does Beer Jew think on this one? He's still our resident 'mo, right?

Damn, I have been busy and haven't read any Simmons for a while - will see what he thinks this weekend.baffled wrote:That's pretty much what Bill Simmons and his readers said in his mailbag last Friday.

I am not sure how demonstrative he would need to be as it's not like this is going to slip from the public's consciousness in the near future. In fact, he could go on to have the most fantastic NFL career, donate his millions to charity and be abducted by aliens in his final game on Earth and you would still think "imaginary girlfriend" when you see him.
The gay angle is the only thing that makes sense. Coming out for a Mormon islander playing at a Catholic university couldn't be easy though.
Actually, I am certain he is gay - if you answer the questions with "faaaaaaaaar from it", like several people here would do, you are clearly deep in the closet though may not come out.

I'm glad that Katie Couric has sprung into action and his striving to get this all sorted out.

I was a fan of the old Mike and Mike radio show years ago, and would LMAO when they'd call Katie on air and ask her what color panties she was wearing. Back then she wasn't all uptight and would play along. Whatever happened to that kind of innocence in broadcasting.Kazuya Mishima wrote:I'm glad that Katie Couric has sprung into action and his striving to get this all sorted out.

He can't be racist. There is a Mexican kid who works at the gas station on the corner and he has never spit in his face or firebombed his house.protobuilder wrote:That's rasist!baffled wrote:I have a lot of experience with Samoans.
