My first question is what do these official rankings actually mean? Does it mandate certain matches or is still Dana making the fights the fans want to see? Can you still have unranked fighters like Sonnen getting title shots? And how can Edgar still be top ten after dropping three fights?

All rankings not derived from man on man matches is mental masturbation at best and a way for people who get paid to write and comment on the sport to play important at worse.

I think they're doing this for three reasons:Fat Cat wrote:My first question is what do these official rankings actually mean? They have it in boxing via Ring Magazine, so there's that.
There's a huge amount of variance in MMA relative to other sports (many champs getting 1 or 2 defenses before losing), so this gives something for people to follow besides who has the belt in a given weight class.
They have wanted to do this for a while, but only now have the less active weight classes fleshed out enough to do it.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.
Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
I don't think it will do too much. Boxing has often done title fights that don't involve the #1 ranked contender

Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
A lot of nonsense. One that really jumps out is Cormier being ranked the number 3 Heavyweight. I like Cormier and think he will do great, but how can you be ranked third by an organization you have never fought in?
Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
They're ranked by the number of concussions and brain damage.
Obama's narcissism and arrogance is only superseded by his naivete and stupidity.
Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
I did rankings for a couple different websites for years and my conclusion is that it's all bullshit for the most part. And any UFC rankings released by them could not possibly be accurate (Edgar, Guida, probably more).

Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
Yeah, on one level I agree but then I question why they took this step in the first place.

It's something for the media to cover?Fat Cat wrote:Yeah, on one level I agree but then I question why they took this step in the first place.

Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
Is Cormier not going to drop down to LHW now?
Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
Could be, but it's more likely to haunt you than serve you well, right? Because now people will be harping on the dissonance between the rankings and the match ups, if they don't follow.Grandpa's Spells wrote:It's something for the media to cover?Fat Cat wrote:Yeah, on one level I agree but then I question why they took this step in the first place.
If I understood gambling more, which I don't, there might be a perceptible angle there. I know the Fertitas have a lot of interest in gambling, could there be angle there? By influencing odds or something?

Re: T200 and others...UFC official rankings are out
I think getting the rabble stirred up and getting articles written about "underrated"/"overrated" fighters sells PPVs. I'm not endorsing it, but polarizing the fans and upping the word count on your sport is good for business.Fat Cat wrote:Could be, but it's more likely to haunt you than serve you well, right?
