The worst are starlings. If these wind farms can kill enough starlings, the subsidies they receive might be justified.

BTW I heard that the nuclear waste storage tanks in the State of Washington are leaking. Is that true?

feral cats and buildings kill more birds by perhaps 100,000 times.Blaidd Drwg wrote:I've done some wind generation project work. The downsides are they kill birds and...they are ugly.
Bad for your health? No one is even remotely close to coming up with a link.
some wind facilities in the east (pa and wv) have been rough on bats.
the health complaints have been documented by kooks. our own quack can probably cite studies from some of his classmates.

Re: Wind farms bad for your health
We've got a lot of wind farms around here.
We also have a lot of birds.
I'm in pretty good health, but I'm also 29, so I win for a while still.
In short, fuck birds.

So, to summarize, noise, by definition is unwanted and annoying. Noise, which is subjective, can cause health problems. There are a small number of studies that link wind turbines to various health problems but primarily when they were above the sound levels allowed in the US. Most turbines produce such low frequency sound that they may not be able to be heard by humans though if they do, nothing more serious than slight annoyance and only if you live very nearby.Andy79 wrote:try this one

A public health menace if I have ever heard of one.

One guy who lives close to one explained that when one of the blades hits the bottom position it puts out enough energy that it makes a "poof" sound. This continuous pulsating sound keeps him awake at night. Sleep deprivation=shear stress. Stress upsets the metabolic processes=manifestations of physical diseases. Just the visual pollution of these wind farms is enough to raise stress levels to negatively affect mental and physical health.Terry B. wrote:So, to summarize, noise, by definition is unwanted and annoying. http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/crux/ ... S5GMlf0MctBut the bigger problem is that “wind turbine syndrome” is what is known as a “communicated” disease, says Simon Chapman, a professor of public health at the University of Sydney. The disease, which has reached epidemic proportions in Australia, “spreads via the nocebo effect by being talked about, and is thereby a strong candidate for being defined as a psychogenic condition,” Chapman wrote several months ago in The Conversation.
What Chapman is describing is a phenomenon akin to mass hysteria—an outbreak of apparent health problems that has a psychological rather than physical basis. Such episodes have occurred throughout human history; earlier this year, a cluster of teenagers at an upstate New York high school were suddenly afflicted with Tourette syndrome-like symptoms. The mystery outbreak was attributed by some speculation to environmental contaminants
As for “wind turbine syndrome,” Chapman noted that “17 reviews [.docx file] of the available evidence about wind farms and health” had found no strong evidence that turbines were making people ill. One meta study released by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health early this year concluded that wind turbines cause no noticeable increase in health problems, though the turbines’ sound and shadow flicker might annoy nearby residents.

It's more accurately, the industry side...but same same.
Sadly for those that don't like noisy things or ugly things or things which are new, the current science is not on your side.

You work for the government indirectly. Best to find arguments on their side. Really I'm on that side too. I want my SS checks and free stuff to keep coming. All that medical bullshit about stress being the root cause of drug abuse, obesity and shit is just bullshit for now.

Re: Wind farms bad for your health
There are perfectly good reasons to dislike the government's support of wind farms without tracking down crazy people who think noises and shadows are making them sick.

People who think wind farms are a cost effective answer to our energy problems were already crazier than people who eat muesli.Andy79 wrote:But they are making people crazy and sick.Pinky wrote:There are perfectly good reasons to dislike the government's support of wind farms without tracking down crazy people who think noises and shadows are making them sick.
