Well more of decline of civility has hit home.

I pick up the boys from Belmont Elementary and I am not more than half way home when my 7 year old son, Aidan tells me that his substitute teacher swore in school today.

I asked, did she say it to the class or did you just hear her talkng to another teacher?

"No, she said it to me."

"What did she say?"

"I can't say, it's a real bad word."

"Say it, I give you permission. I need to know, now."

"She said " Shut the fuck up."

So I pulled a 3 point right then as I called Gina to let her know.

I asked him to tell me again, and if there was anything else.

He and I, with Liam there as well talked with the principle's assitant and he was none to happy about it.

He knows Aidan well and he knows that Aidan might be a handfull and a ball of energy along with a smart ass but Aidan does not lie.

This kid will rat himself out.

He had nothing to gain from a lie. He got the highest mark he could get on his behavior chart, so he was not trying to use it to deflect.

He is happy he has substitutes this week. He liked the guy yesterday alot, so he's not using it to get his teacher back or anything like that.

Now the PA said he'd get to the bottom of it and she would not be there tomorrow and after they go through the process she won't be coming to Belmont again he is going to talk to who ever runs the subs.

I told Aidan though that IF she was in his classroom tomorrow, he was to tell her that he wants to go to the office.

"What if she says no?"

"Number 1 she is breaking the law at that point. #2 You have my permission to yell, scream, knock things over untill either she lets you go or the real teachers in the next rooms come in. Don;t worry about getting in trouble because they will call me and I will be coming to get you and handle things."

I will be following up with the school tomorrow anyway.

Bad enough to tell a 7 year old, motor mouth though he might be to "Shut up". My step mother has a thing about that I have taken as my own. You don't say that to people. (for the most part, there are caviats, like if my kids are being animals)

But to tell a 7 year old boy to "Shut the fuck up" is beyond even my foul mouth.

Some adult said that to him on the outside, the "fall" would shatter their lower jaw.

Shouldn't you be yelling at your own kid for having to be told that? I can only imagine the shit he was pulling to make a random stranger with his job on the line tell the kid to STFU.

I can't make a judgement on the lad's specific behaviors that day, but I can state from experience that there are a substantial number of teachers who don't like boys, who don't "get" boys, and who can't really handle boys who are filled with energy.

And they have no buisness being elementary teachers, especially 1st grade.

He is a very energetic boy. A real motormouth sometimes but I would not tamp his energy because he's very motivated.

He never has to be told to do his homework like his 10 year old brother. The older one is more cerebral, but Aidan is starting to show alot of intelectual curiosity. He joined the Chess clas in the after school program.

My oldest was a real hard head untill this year but no one told him to Shut up and definatly not Shut the fuck up.

The kid has a gruff, kinda "western" thing about him. He loves when we play Outlaw Country music, animals and the outdoors.

The son of a local HS principle with his wife (a professor in education at a local university and an advisor to the school district, he's afro carrib, she's black) had a kid who was terrible. In preschool he hit other kids, swore, called the teachers names, and shit like that, but the school, which was a Montessori , didn't do anything about it because of who they were.

The kid needed structure, not the Montessori experience.

I complained to the director of the Montessor school several times about this kid, because he'd aggravate my daughter and other kids, and he'd do it while I was there in the classroom helping out and reading to the kids.

Time goes on and this kid was put into the local gifted program. Which was, of course, in the same school district his parents worked (the advisor position his mom held paid $40K a year on top of her salary at the uni, and she didn't do a fucking thing. This is how this district is...they are also a mostly minority district, and they get fucktons of money each year, which go to paying advisors and admin, not to the kids and classrooms).

Incident after incident occurred, this kid was basically a criminal and a bully, and the principle of the gifted school would expel him then his parents would threaten and cajol the right people until they put him back in, until finally a little girl was pushed down a flight of stairs, with the principle and another teacher as witnesses, deliberately, by this kid. The girl was concussed and broke her wrist, but her parents were attorneys, so they fired up several lawsuits, holding the district and the parents responsible. The kid was expelled and who knows where the fuck he is now.

Did she tell the other kids to STFU? Is your son the only boy in that class? You went to the school about the sub, what did you do about your son acting out in class?

Boys have always been boys, I remember acting out 1st, 2nd grade and getting the paddle.

So either he was not acting out, or she gave him a 5 to cover her ass after saying it?

If he's acting out, she can tell him to be quiet, mark him down on the chart, restrict his reces, all kinds of shit.

A friend of mine does substitute teaching in NoVA. As I understand it this is how it works:
1. If a teacher likes a particular substitute, they will arrange up front to get the sub they like.
2. If they don't have a particular favorite, or it's a last minute thing, they will put out a general call from the sub pool.

Subs can be taken off the list for particular class or school-- the system is automated.

Talk to the principal and the regular teacher of the class. Get this chick taken off both lists.
