Question for CHL Bichos

Post by powerlifter54 »

Have narrowed down CHL choice to several revolvers, this is currently number 1. Like other choices for other uses, but for my cargo pocket a revolver will do.

Thoughts?

Jack, there are many "moving parts" to this decision. I don't like the exposed hammer for pocket carry because it can hang up on your clothing. I have read that the Taurus rubbers grips are also sticky...good design for recoil absorption, but may be hard to get out of the pocket.
And I strongly recommend a holster for pocket carry.

Get thee to a range that rents handguns. Shoot it before you buy it.

Also, some advice from Uncle Garm: http://irongarmx.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=86

ditto what johno said - no hammer and go for some nonsticky grips. i had a taurus jframe for awhile and had no problems with it. sample size of one, so who knows?
have you ever been as far as even considered go want to do look more like?

Or you put your thumb over the hammer and it wont snag as you pull it. That's a pretty low and small hamer so that old school trick will work better on it.

I like the option of being able to pull back the hammer for SA pull (Fucker just grabbed your kid, wife, mother ect. The threat is at a longer range.) and intimidation.

You should always be willing to use it if you pull it but that does not mean use it because you pulled it. There are times I can think of where you would pull it to fuck them off or convence them to put whateve down (again being willing to carry out the threat) and that click and action of pulling back a hammer says "This is no empty threat!" better than your mouth can.

Not saying the other advice is not valid or good, just another take. People carried snubbies with hammers for years, the thumb over the hammer trick is what the trained/smart ones did.

If you get a chance, shoot a well broken in clipped hammer SP101. Once broken in, I enjoyed it a lot. Should have never sold that gun.

SP101 is a nice revolver. Fuckers can handle plus P all day long.

Taurus quality is a crapshoot, the FFLs I know report Tauruses are the most likely of the big brands to be brought back in and sent off to the factory for work.

If you want a revolver to pocket carry, spring for a Ruger SP101 or S&W J-Frame (642 hammerless; 640 with a nub of a hammer, 638 with a full hammer IIRC). There are enough variations in model to find something close to the Taurus and dozens of aftermarket grip options if you want recoil-reducing grips.

With the J-frame, get a Wolff or Wilson Combat spring kit - $20 drops the pull from 12+ pounds to 10ish. Still safe but much more manageable than 12 vs 10 would indicate.

Smith 642 with nice non rubber grips.put a clipdraw on it and you can then give yourself another option of carry. Smith and Wesson ...what else you going to say? They got it dicked when yer talking revolvers.

Why a revolver Jack? Any special considerations?

Doesn't need a magazine-- maybe he doesn't want to carry an assault weapon?

Thanks to all. Off to gunshow and to the range again. Revolver is for simplicity. i have to carry a semi-auto for "business" purposes and although it and other "business" gear is awesome, i am looking for small and simple for daily carry and will only need 5 shots for my intended purpose, which is not a firefight. Darth's points about the hammer are interesting.

Good luck... if the shows near you are like the one I was at recently, get in early. It was like a mosh pit inside, there were so many people.
