Using Ipad as your sole computer.
I've been debating this, but the mobility and minimalist feeling has me intoxicated.
There are several articles and I will attach a pdf on the subject. Many writers, bloggers, small business' are using Ipad as there only source of connection.
Opinions? I know Shaf was not too happy with this. Read the pdf and tell me what you think.

I use the mobile and minimalist "notebook computer" format.

Re: Using Ipad as your sole computer.
The ipad is a great toy - download an amazing looking cookbook! play the walking dead! etc. - in my experience that thrill tapers off quickly if you already have a smartphone. Maybe if you had a long train commute that didn't require 'real work.'
Typing on the iPad sucks (I type 80-90wpm on a regular keyboard - if you hunt and peck, it might not be so bad), responsiveness is weak, the web experience is more frustrating than with a real OS (X, Windows or Linux, whatever) and browser.
If you need to do work on it and attach a keyboard for typing, you might as well just get a 11-inch Macbook Air. Expensive, but the Apple trackpads are miles ahead of any PC trackpad.

Yes, I'd get a bluetooth keyboard, use dropbox, etc.
Read the pdf, since this guy has tried everything, but of course the IGX scrutiny is like black coffee and acid.

Re: Using Ipad as your sole computer.
iPad gets me 95% of the work stuff I need to do on the road, and 100% of the goofing off, but I'm not quite prepared to go all the way on this.
Re: Using Ipad as your sole computer.
I'm a desktop, laptop and tablet user.
iPad (and tablets in general) absolutely stink for content creation.
I can get by with just the tablet when I know all I'm going to be doing is consuming content. But as soon as I have to produce anything but the simplest document or spreadsheet, I'd rather have the laptop.
Of interest to me at the moment are devices like:
Asus vivo tab http://www.asus.com/Tablet_Mobile/ASUS_VivoTab
Lenovo Idea Pad http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/cont ... TMM728901&
Zenbook http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabook ... ouch_UX31A

I agree. Fantastic creation overall, though.j-cubed wrote:I'm a desktop, laptop and tablet user.

I'd need a Bluetooth keyboard, I fucking hate thumb typing. I could use google docs for writing.
However, having a set place to work/troll/ watch porn is good.
I use my iPad extensively for reading and entertainment. And I do like the portability

Re: Using Ipad as your sole computer.
It depends what you need a computer for. For many people, using an iPad as their sole device would be not only possible, but a good idea.
I like mine and use it both at home and in the office. However, when I need to create something, off to a laptop I go, even though I do have a keyboard for it which speeds things up a bit but I dislike using as you need to continually tap the screen in many apps. I disliked the touchscreen capabilities of the above-linked Asus Windows 8 laptops for the same reason.
I read through the linked document and the author has thought things through, which a lot of iPad owners never do. However, for the cash that he spent on accessories, he could have picked up a Macbook Air and external hard drive, which is what I would do if I needed to consolidate down to a single computer/device.

What Terry said.
A Macbook Air, refurbished, is pretty much the answer if you're a Mac person.
I love my iPad, but I also couldn't really live without an actual computer to work on.

MacBook Air 11" vs. iPad: size comparison.

Tom,
Bought a refurbished Macbook with Office loaded on it for under$500 delivered. Can see an Ipad in the future (for work believe it or not) but Mrs PL54 is an Ipad addict but you have to add the keyboard. Like working on the Macbook. Not a previous mac guy but not going back. Also got Iphone 5.

Re: Using Ipad as your sole computer.
I'm an IT professional. I own an iPhone 5, iPad and a MacBook Pro as well. Before I got my mobile devices I used my MacBook for everything. I had to. However, since I got the iPad most especially, my MacBook is reserved for important work-related things, for instance the we pages I build and maintain for my handful of personal, pro-bono clients, and also remote-access (via Citrix) to the servers I admin at my "real" job. And frankly, that stuff encompasses, at best, 10% of my time. All other routine stuff that I do- Internet browsing, NetFlix, email, FaceBook and the like, it's iPad or iPhone, all day.TomFurman wrote:I've been debating this, but the mobility and minimalist feeling has me intoxicated.

Re: Using Ipad as your sole computer.
While the number one choice is apple.com for refurbished MacBook Air,... are there any comparable geek sites that offer the one year warranty? I'm getting a million hits on Google relative to this. Years ago I found a guy on ebay who customized the iBook for me. Loaded and super fast. Can't find him. He built a gaming system for my boys too.
I'm upgrading my website and ecommerce, etc. So I have to upgrade and be portable.
Thanks. This is why IGX rocks. Kind of combines the locker room with a Mensa meeting watching porn.

You can find good deals on Woot. Otherwise, I'd just go through Apple.

macmall.com is the best place to get Macs aside from apple.com

Google Chrome is the only way to browse, IMO

Re: Using Ipad as your sole computer.
Not sure what kind of work you do but I could never do actual work on an 11in screen. Is it really going to be any better than an ipad?

If you open multiple browsers, are you on the same Internet with the Mac?
