This proves that in addition to there being a minimum strength level one should attain to excel in a sport, there is also a point of diminishing returns.Terry B. wrote:Combine records for bp (1999-present).

Re: How Weak Is Too Weak?
The guy who runs my gym tried out as a NFL strike player in the 1980's. He's got a couple world titles in WABDL. He got 45 at 220.
They were impressed, but...he was not called back.
Just had a conversation tonight with a Pro SM who is friends with and has competed with Andy Vincent, former pro football player, now pro SM and HG'er....the level of athleticism in the average guy called to to combine is ridiculous..the ones that can barely get 5 reps with 225 are still many times more athletic than a whole pile of "world class" MMA Kung Fu, Weightlifting, Strongman competitors...they may be weak as piss but on the field they could still knock the shit out of anyone here. Probably even the kickers.

Re: How Weak Is Too Weak?
Is there some database somewhere that has the combine results for a good selection of players, and is there some good statistic/set of statistics (like the baseball WAR or something) that I could use to evaluate these players? Though I suppose a simple "lasted a while vs washed out after playing 5 games" would also be a decent stat. Football really isn't my thing, so I don't know. I'm more of a baseball guy, but either I or a couple guys I know who actually do this sort of thing could be enticed to glance at this (if either I have time or can pitch it in an interesting enough way).

Larry Allen went to my college. He was there like 12 years before I got there, but he benched over 700 and I think had something like a 905 squat. No idea how many reps he did at the combine.
Had a pretty good career.

Title IX killed the football program, IIRC. Heard that my fraternity used to hire Allen and other guys from the team for security at parties, but who knows if the old guys just wanted to sound cool.

Re: How Weak Is Too Weak?
Good example. The coach who taught me throws in university had been teammates with Allen and said that he was the strongest guy he had ever been around....and had a laughable shot-put (for a guy that size and strength). He was using it as an example of needing a blend of strength and skill which LA obviously had in football.baffled wrote:Larry Allen went to my college. Re: How Weak Is Too Weak?
I would believe RG III has a 375 BP before I'd buy Obama having a 200 BP.

Re: How Weak Is Too Weak?
Obama 200 is realistic. We've seen video of him doing pullups, and a 180 guy doing a few pullups should be able to do 200. But, no, wouldn't buy 300.

There was a time that I could do 22 pull-ups with no kip and it was 50-50 whether
I could bench 200 at the same time.
I could bench 200 at the same time.

He said 300. He also said he weighs about 180. Sure, 180 with 50 pounds of body armor under his $3000 taxpayer paid suit.powerlifter54 wrote:He said he could bench 300 if the rich would just pay their fair share.milosz wrote:Obama says he can bench 200.Andy79 wrote:Tiger Woods said Obama is a great athlete. Re: How Weak Is Too Weak?
Update from the NFL combine. Margus Hunt, an Estonian track and field champ made 38 reps on the bench press. He said on radio today, that he really didn't train for it very much, since his track and field training provided him plenty of strength training. He also only started playing American football in college.
NOTRE Dame's Manti Te'o knocked out a solid two reps.
SMU’s Margus Hunt impresses scouts at combine

One of the more impressive performances this week at the NFL combine belongs to a guy who has only been playing football for the last few seasons.
Defensive end Margus Hunt from SMU only took up football in 2009 but according to Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com, Hunt had one of the more impressive workouts this weekend in Indianapolis. Hunt was “the talk of the town” after his workout on Monday.
The 6-foot-8, 277 pound defensive end was among the leaders for defensive linemen in the bench press and 40-yard dash. Hunt completed 38 reps of 225 pounds, which matched Brandon Williams from Missouri Southern State for most reps among any participant at the combine. Hunt also ran a 4.60 in the 40-yard dash which was tied for third-best among linemen. Only Trevardo Wiilliams from Connecticut (4.57) and Barkevious Mingo from LSU (4.58) posted faster times.
Hunt is one of the more interesting prospects in the upcoming draft. He’s only been playing football since 2009 after joining the football program at SMU. The Estonian native was originally an accomplished track and field athlete. Hunt won gold medals in the shot put and discus in the 2006 World Junior Track and Field Championships in Beijing. He also won the discus title at the European Junior championships in 2005.
Hunt is currently considered to be a likely second day draft pick but could see his stock rise after his strong showing at the combine. Despite his lack of football experience, Hunt’s raw athletic ability and size should be incredibly intriguing to personnel directors in the NFL. New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was also considered to be fairly raw when coming out of South Florida in 2010. Pierre-Paul has since become one of the more dynamic pass rushers in the league. If Hunt can continue to progress as a football player, Hunt has the ability to become a surprise star in the NFL.
edit: The interviewer also said that Hunt blocked 17 kicks during his years at SMU, which seems almost impossible to believe.

Re: How Weak Is Too Weak?
If you look at heights and weights of nfl kickers and punters most of them are over 200 lbs these days. Janikowski and Steve Weatherford of the giants are studs in the weightroom.
