I hopped freight trains from Whitefish, Montana to Seattle at the end of a summer working in Glacier National Park. Crazy fun trip.

Back in the day, I rode trains from CA to Wisconsin. Once.

Kind of a pain in the ass. You find an empty car. Good deal. It goes 40 miles. Nobody hauls an empty car across the US. Best deal were the Pacific Fruit Express trucks. You could grab a ride under the front part of the truck, where the cab goes. Got pretty cold across the mountains.

I don't know who owns Vice I just saw that HBO had picked them up for a video series. I don't think it will affect their content at all.
