So, how does one estimate how many GB of data they'll need? I hate people, so rarely use voice minutes; but the innernets I like. How does one estimate how much data to buy?

I guess you mean 2 gigs/month? And are iPhones particularly better at syncing with Macs?baffled wrote:The guy at Verizon said the average user rarely goes over 2 gigs per day. He said/day. I didn't really pay attention to him because I don't have a need for a new plan, which I guess he was trying to sell me on.Thud wrote:I guess you mean 2 gigs/month? I could see how a real power user could end up churning through 2 gigs in a day, but they'd have to be downloading a shitload of files, loading video, surfing the web etc.
You'd have to try to do it though. If you have semi-regular access to wifi, I don't know how you'd ever get even close to that amount of data.
The iPhone 4 is fine. I had it, upgraded to the 4s, then my 4s went to shit and now I'm on a Samsung. If you don't care about having Siri, it's really no different. Maybe the 4s is a little faster and smoother, but if you're just getting into the smartphone/gadget geek thing, I wouldn't spend the extra $200 on the 4s.

Re: I'm Getting Rid Of My iPhone
Be smart and buy an unlocked phone, whether you get it from Apple, Google or wherever and go with a pay-as-you go plan from Straight Talk or T-Mobile. Unlimited data, all-you-can-eat everything for $45-a-month. No contracts, no stupid early termination fees. Nada. Did it six months ago and it's been heaven.
I will never buy a locked phone again. Ever. You usually have to buy the phone right up front, which can be pricey, but you will save money by not being locked into a multi-year contract that subsidizes the cost of the phone. Make sure you get an unlocked phone, though. I learned the hard way when I kicked Sprint to the curb. Gave my wife my iPhone 4S (I'm using vanilla android on a Google Samsung Nexus and loving every minute of it) and had to become my own personal IT guy to get around Sprint's refusal to unlock a phone I bought outright. Had to purchase an interposer to make the phone workable with something other than Sprint because they will only unlock for international use. The interposer bypasses the lock and allows my phone to use the GSM band instead of CDMA and it works great.
Like I said, whatever you do, just don't go with a locked phone or get tied down to a contract. You will have many more options and a much better general experience.

Sounding good. I was just looking at something like this:JonnyCat wrote:Be smart and buy an unlocked phone, whether you get it from Apple, Google or wherever and go with a pay-as-you go plan from Straight Talk or T-Mobile.
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cel ... ne=Nexus-4
with maybe the $30/mo 100 mins talk/unlimited data.
Would such a phone be locked or unlocked? And what does your monthly bill actually end up being after taxes, surcharges, etc?
Edit: Oops, looks like I can answer the locked part myself: "For the ultimate Nexus 4 experience, add unlimited data on a nationwide 4G network, only from T-Mobile—the only carrier to offer Nexus 4. New 2-yr. agmt. on qualifying plan required. Data service required"
Still seems like a good deal though...

Re: I'm Getting Rid Of My iPhone
Guys, I bought an unlocked Nexus 4 from Google for $350 and I'm setting it up with a $30/mo no contract T-Mobile account.
I've only had it a couple of days and I'm not exactly Einstein, but how do you Mac fanboys deal with this shit? I've been busting my brain for days just getting my iCal shit to sync 2-ways with Google Calendar. I haven't even gotten to iTunes shit. I expected much better Mac/Android integration.
Maybe I'm doing it all wrong trying to get Mac stuff to work on Android. Should I be bringing Android stuff to the Mac?
But I like Mac...really thinking I shoulda spent the dough and went with an iPhone. But is my little brain missing something obvious?

Baffled, have you been carrying your smart phones in your front pants pocket? Several recent studies have showed a direct link between location of the smart phone to your testicles and infertility, low T, and testicular cancer.

Hey Baff...you still diggin' that phone? I fucked around with that Note 2 again at lunch and almost bought it. Been looking at a few things e.g. Google Music, Dropbox for music and photo related shit since we're always gonna be Apple relative to desktop, notebook etc. I may just pull the trigger this weekend.
Re: I'm Getting Rid Of My iPhone
I love my phone. It is perfect for dick shots, it plays music, Google Now is amazing (check it out here: http://www.google.com/landing/now/), navigation is awesome, the S Voice or whatever it's called makes Siri seem as illiterate as proto, and I've also noticed that my pubes are growing faster and I've gained an extra inch or two on my member.Shapecharge wrote:Hey Baff...you still diggin' that phone? Re: I'm Getting Rid Of My iPhone
Update: Still love it.
Was having some issues charging, and realized the stock charger isn't very good. Got one from verizon for $20 and it's been good to go.
During one update, it switched from 4G LTE to Global. That caused a couple issues, but it's a simple switch in the settings and no problems since.
S-Voice is sharp, Google Calendar and Tasks are rad, and I've decided (begrudgingly) to use Chrome as my browser. I use Chrome for a lot on my computer, and being able to sync from device to device is pretty rad.
I'm a big fan.

I picked up the S4 over the weekend. I like it so far. I haven't had a chance to really dive in all the way, but the phone sounds good and the email updates super quick. Also, the battery life seems to be real good.
S Voice is nice, but as of right now I think Siri is better. Also, even though it's real big, it's so thin that it doesn't matter. It fits easily in my pocket. Some very nice picture options, too. If you like to take pics this phone will really work for you.

Interesting take. I'm a fan of my S3, obviously, but I had heard the S4 didn't hold up well against the HTC One, or First, or whatever it's called.msr2112 wrote:I picked up the S4 over the weekend. Personally, it sounded to me like Samsung was suffering from the same curse Apple did with their iPhone 4 to iPhone 4s models. Solid upgrades, but not massive leaps like people have come to expect.
Swype or Swiftkey are huge for texting, Chrome kicks ass on phones (better than computers), and S Voice is mostly better than Siri on the S3, but when it hiccups, it does it in a big way. Kind of random.

I'm not much of a techy and my last phone was an HTC EVO Shift so I can't really compare the S4 to anything current. They had the HTC One but I didn't really check it out. I remember that when I got my EVO Shift there was a lot of talk about how HTC's had bad battery life and that was the one thing I never liked about that phone. The One is probably better but I just didn't check it out. It is a nice looking phone, though.baffled wrote:Interesting take. Re: I'm Getting Rid Of My iPhone
I'm due for an upgrade...is the S4 still the way to go or should I give the iphone a look? I am leaning towards the Galaxy S4. And which iphone if I do take a look at them. Keep in mind that I am coming from a gifted Droid X and have never used an iphone. I did mess around with a friend's iphone and it seemed easier to maneuver but I had an HTC Incredible at the time.
Btw, I just mainly use mine for phone, texting, taking pictures/video (regular pics and instagram) and social media. Not really any need for work purposes.
Thanks!

Re: I'm Getting Rid Of My iPhone
I would probably go back to the iPhone. Either 5s or 5c, depending on whether I was willing to spend $200 or not.
I would prefer that my phone take a massive shit like my iPhone did instead of the smaller turds that my Android leaves. Little things start to add up over time, and I am none-too-happy with how many little quirks my S3 has.

Re: I'm Getting Rid Of My iPhone
Got the Galaxy S4 when I ruined by old phone and needed one that day for a trip. I was in a Verizon store and had done no research. I just asked the clerks which phone they wanted. S4 all around.
It's great. Get the Swift Keyboard. Much faster than the Samsung one and way better at autocorrect. I'm not sold on the S-voice. Perfer google voice. Press the mic and say, "what the Green Bay Packer score?" Google (in a female voice) comes back and says, "The Packers lead the Lions 21 to 9." Synchs perfectly with my google calendar. Tasks are separate but G-Tasks works really well. I have an ipod and with an emulation google calender and task list. They all synch to the S4 and my MacBook.
I didn't think I was very geeky, but I spend a lot of time working on the S4. Found a great grocery shopping app called ziplist. Find a recipe on the net on the mac, click a button to copy then click list and the ingredients are on a list (which synchs to the S4)and is easy to use in the store because it's organized by ailes: produce, dairy, baking goods etc.
I'm very happy with the thing. Also, I go to Africa next week. Verizon has some sort of global roaming plan. You can apparently buy it by the month, which is about how long I'll be gone. I will report back on that.

My iPhone 4S is great.
The big area the android phones just seem to be behind is with picture taking. I get some amazing pictures with the iPhone because it's right there and takes a good shot
