Belize suggestions?
Headed to Belize for a week, will be scuba diving 3 days around Caye Caulker/Blue Hole. I'm wondering if there are sights or activities that should be hit?
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

You going to the Blue Hole? You can just snorkle around in it, but there isn't much to see. The real dive is way below recommended sport diving depths. @220 feet. But you have to go that low to see the stalactites. Since these can't form in salt water, they are proof that the Blue Hole was once a terrestrial sink hole cave. And further proof that, back then, the sea level was at least 230 feet lower. (It was probably 400 feet.)
You fly out in a pontoon plane. Rig some tanks so you can hang off on the way up.
When I did it, I recall later going to a bar on Amerigis Cay. They had a picture taken inside the Blue Hole. Circling above the photographer were two hammerheads. I ordered a double...

Belize in your self.

I stayed on Caye Caulker for 3 weeks about a decade ago. I took a water taxi to Belize City and then took a van/boat combo to the Mayan pyramids. Was awesome.
And let’s not forget SHAF the pajama clad postulator extolling opinions on a dozen different fitness forums 10 to 12 hours a day including major holidays.

i wasn't satisfied with the diving in belize - they got that shit on lockdown and everything is rigidly guided and heavily trafficked. i'm sure you'll have a good time, but probably end up making plans for honduras next time (better, cheaper, imo). enjoy the fruit smoothie stands.
if you head inland at all, san ignacio is an amazing town. it's up in the mountains near guatemala and is just cool as shit - a kick ass kinda ghetto cosmopolitan. also was super cheap a coupla years ago and great food all over. it's about a 3hr bus and ferry ride from caulker. if i do the ex-pat thing down south for retirement, this place is at the top of the list.
plus, the ATM cave is right around the corner and it's super badass. you basically wade/swim a mile into this cave system, climb outta the 'river' and up into a buncha mayan burial/ceremony sites.

Caye Caulker is supposed to be a great place generally, I've heard about the very mixed reviews on the diving.sanchezero wrote:i wasn't satisfied with the diving in belize - they got that shit on lockdown and everything is rigidly guided and heavily trafficked. i'm sure you'll have a good time, but probably end up making plans for honduras next time (better, cheaper, imo). enjoy the fruit smoothie stands.
