UN sanctions hurt the common people and do nothing to stop the flow of goods to the military. The only country that North Korea will listen to is China - China tightens the leash and things get serious.
The US and North Korea are equally guilty of saber rattling. The US says that North Korea is threatening the peace and responds by deploying 30 new missiles along the west coast, upping maneuvers with South Korea along the border and saying that they are ready to respond militarily. Yeah, the US is cutting off White House tours because they are out of money, are engaged in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq and are going to do anything on the Korean peninsula?
The US has two realistic options.
1. Ignore North Korea. That's it. Prepare for a response and be ready, of course, but tossing insults back and forth is idiotic.
2. Sit down with China and South Korea and work out a solution. Previous talks had the US, PRC, both Koreas, Japan and Russia and were moderately successful despite everybody in the room hating at least two of the others.

Hawaii has nice strategic value for the US. If somebody in Asia gets full of themselves and decides to attack America, it is sitting out as a nice easy target. Sure, the cost of pineapples go up but an attack on the US would mean TOTAL WAR and the military machine is able to kick into high gear.
