There are a lot of Russian girls in my part of Brooklyn. Some of the really hot ones drive luxury cars but use EBT cards (food stamps) in the 7/11. They collect welfare while working as strippers in Staten Island.

Well personally I've always advocated eliminating welfare altogether, but once you're officially a citizen anything goes.

My wife used to work as a career counsellor at a private adult learning centre that taught ESL and high school upgrading, catering to welfare recipients who wanted to become employable, and immigrants who needed English and school credits to either upgrade their education or enter the workforce.

Inevitably the immigrants always worked harder. No attendance problems, good grades, etc. In some cases there'd be pregnant women from Africa and the Middle East who would take a medical absence for a couple of days to give birth, then show right away to write their exams.

You never hear about the immigrants who come here work and build a life. Yet your local convenience store or gas station is owned by someone who is grateful for the opportunity they've been given.

True story. If they're coming from overseas legally, they've already put in a big investment and have more of an incentive to be competitive than those that snuck across the border.

I live in Queens which is 48% foreign-born (most in the US and possibly anywhere) and every small business around here is run by a foreigner. And yet they provide good, cheap services, are honest, and work hard to keep their families fed. The Koreans press my shirts, the Chinese sell me groceries, the Irish sell me drinks, the Indians run the convenience stores, the Russians furnish my apartment, etc.

And there was me thinking that everyone in the USA was an immigrant apart from the red indians.

We have a mix of Iraqis and Sikhs.

The guy who ran the main liquor store in my college town used to complain about how nobody here saved and just spent and spent. He was there everyday, from open til close.

I have become nominally pro-immigration, but under the right circumstances.

For instance, Mexicans who are here as immigrants are far more productive and worthwhile than their offspring tend to be. At least, that's the general trend out here in Cali.

Most of my coworkers are immigrants and many are the first generation born here. They work their asses off and I have tremendous respect for them. Many own small businesses in addition to working a job.
