Seeking knowledge about extremely sore rear deltoid

Post by Bob Wildes »

Its a long story but I had to chase my careening truck, open the door, jump in and slam on the brakes.

Being an old fart, I managed to rip something in my left rear deltoid.

now I cannot get my left arm up enough to hold a 44 pound bar to squat and van manage only about a
12 inch range of motion on the descent of a bench press.

Yeah I know not to attempt the above until my shoulder is 95% or so. Right now I can do wrist curls.
reverse wrist curls and weighted helmet work for upper body work. I can deadlift though.

My main question is what are the pros and cons about deadlifting during this time from those of you
that have had severe rotator cuff and/or shoulder problems in the past.

Sounds more like a rotator cuff tear to me based on the limited data. You should get checked out by a sports med doc or ortho and will probably need an MRI to evaluate the need for surgery vs rehab. Do you have any weakness/pain on moving the arm over your head or behind your back? Can you move your shoulder through a normal (same as before injury) range of motion (when standing, not related to lifting, just moving the arm unweighted)?

No I cannot move the arm through a complete range of motion, even by itself.

I did have rotator cuff issues for a few years, but was in pretty good shape, cuff-wise,
before the truck incident.

I never had cuff issues before the age of 55 or so. Did a bit of O-lifting when I was in my
mid forties with no problem.

As strange as it sounds, I put part of the blame on excessive running for several years in my bid to
late fifties. That and pull-up binges and a bit of dip work with dodgy shoulders.

I'd guess something in the rotator cuff as well. Speaking from experience, I blew the capsule off, tore my biceps tendon and tore two muscles in my rotator cuff and had similar symptoms.

Didn't know about the biceps tendon until surgery.

Thanks guys. Mine is not nearly as bad. I can even sleep on that side at night if I'm careful.

I am pretty sure mine will be okay in 4-6 weeks. maybe sooner. If I was 30 years old I think that I
would be fine in a week to ten days.

I am still learning how long it takes to recover at 60.

Keep an eye on it. I had some nasty stuff crop up in my back and neck from my bad shoulder.

Now, it's better than the other side.

Sounds like a teres minor. I tore mine in a similar movement pattern. If you're going to injure one of the muscles in the rotator cuff, this is the one to hurt.

The DL may or may not be ok depending on what the actual injury is. That's something you need to figure out.

It sounds worse than it was.

Quick play in a rugby game. Made a huge tackle on a huge kid, but paid for it.

Missed the last word in the title on first read-through. Figured you must have gone camping with Shape.
