Gordon Besaw: Blind Oklahoma veteran takes down would-be attacker in broad daylight

By: Jessica Remer, KJRH
OKLAHOMA CITY -- A blind veteran was forced to defend himself after being attacked in broad daylight.
Fifty-one-year-old Gordon Besaw has glaucoma. He and his seeing eye dog, Derby, were headed to the VA Medical Center for treatment Tuesday when police say he was attacked by 27-year-old Christopher Andrew.
"He asked me, 'Are you blind?' I said yes," said Besaw. "He said, 'I can make you see before you see God.' "
Police say Andrew punched the retired U.S. Army Special Forces soldier in the head.
"He said, 'I can make you see again' and he punched me in the head again," Besaw said. "I'm like, 'Man, you're not going to like the way this is going to go.'"

Besaw says he let go of his dog's leash, told Derby to stay and used his military training to subdue Andrew until police arrived.
"I hip tossed him," said Besaw. "... and I began to choke him."
When police arrived, they found Besaw on top of Andrew.
The vet's would-be attacker is now facing felony charges for aggravated assault and battery.

Judging by Besaw's age, he probably learned some Gracie Combat JJ in his time in Special Forces...Hip Toss & choke.

51? Probably Judo or just had some good Hand to hand in his ODA.

Look at Tirey (and legions like him, He'd be 59 now) they take it on themselves to go and train MA.)

BTW SF is having an Aussie SF guy retool their hand to hand, no MAC for them it seems.

Or he was just a bad ass dude, maybe learned that hip toss in HS Wrestling or some rassling growing up.

It would be cool to know what his Hand to hand training was.

That is a great story though.

JJ Combatives came to the Ranger Regiment in the '90's. Batboy could tell you the year.

Larson. I know of him.

Lots of guys were not that impressed with him, Tirey included but he's made a nice deal for himself and it's better than Army units using LINE. They show a little doc on Pentagon channel about it. The BJJ and standing grappling looks good but the boxing one of the instructors was showing was shit, a boxing instructor who dropped his shoulder every time he threw a right.

And as Tirey said it was good to see the Rangers implementing a program so everyone, not just guys into MA got some hand to hand. It has given them something to build on.

Said back then there was an Army Hand to hand dept. in the 90s but it was 2 guys in some spare office space at Bragg or Bening (Long time ago conversation).

He hired Kelly McCann to instruct in his unit as it was a nice system where pistol, knife impact and empty hand were taught as a transitional system. He made this mandatory as he did not feel enough guys took advantage of the informal sessions the martial artist in the unit held.

Jim and I did a lot of the McCann CQC stuff through the Jim filter, good stuff. That and some BJJ or Judo would be a great way to go. (The McCann stuff was weak on the ground at the time.)

I remember he saying "The Marines get a good, comprehensive hand to hand program and the Army gets a Beret, great."

Yeah, Larsen for the Rangers. My grappling instructor knows him. In fact, Eric has taught JJ combatives to the 2/75 (and SF too, I think). Eric's take is that most 22 year old Rangers just want to smash each other, that the fine points are lost on them. Regardless, they learn something, and develop confidence.

I don't know when JJ was introduced to SF, might have been on a Group by Group basis. Anyhow, it's pure speculation on my part, but Besaw was 32 years old when Jits came to the 2/75, so he may have been exposed to it.

He's a one bad ass dude!

That's another great thing about Judo, Jujutsu or any form of grappling art. You don;t need sight to make it work.

Try being a blind Muay Thai guy? That be like Stevie Wonder racing stock cars.
