This just in- ACLU suing over the phone metadata . It seems the ACLU is a Verizon customer, and is suing on it's own behalf.

edit:

Feinstein also thinks he's a traitor.

Both sides do.

That's a good rule to remember, and this thread is a good reminder that the battle of democrats vs. republicans is largely a smokescreen. Both parties are happily leading us down a darker path.

Turning this fuckstory into a partisan issue is why threads like this are usually epic failures. I'm waiting for Turd to pop in and tell us how Reagan would have saved us.

What a disgusting shitstory this is. Pure Evil.

Starve the beast, yo.

Unless that means a massive increase in spending to drop a boogeyman with funny hats, big coats, and who drinks a shitload of vodka and already has a crumbling economy. Then spend.

The more I think of this, the more it makes me think we're truly fucked in terms of having even the smallest chance at controlling our government again, if we ever had any control, that is.

I think Glenn Greenwald said, not sure which article it was, that the whole thing is reversed now.

We're supposed to know virtually everything government does, and they're supposed to know very little about what we do. Now, they know damn near everything we do, and we know jack little about what they do.

BTW, I don't really know that I would want to be Glenn Greenwald after breaking this story.

I haven't heard anyone evoke crying children yet in this whole thing, so it's clearly still fresh and early days. There's still time to justify this as being better for our kids' futures.

Did it really take 3 pages to realize this?
My political rule to live by is that when democrats and republicans agree on anything, the rest of us are fucked.
I'm all for going after Shafiq al Islam if law enforcement thinks he's planning on blowing shit up.
Date mining everyone is a different story.
So is the FBI going in and setting up Shafiq and his eight dumbass friends, which is what they've excelled at the last decade.

Follow what and why is happening in Turkey right now and see the not so distant future of America. The dragnet here will cleanse and save us all. And don't be calling muslims terrorists. They're doing what they do to help us. Boys, I have a do it yourself at home vasectomy kit for FREE. Get one ASAP if you care about children.

Ed Zachary wrote:Wait. So it's not Obama's fault because he is only the president but its Bush's fault because he was the president. Is that right?
No. While it appears I'm being partisan, my intent was more so to mock the partisanship and hypocrisy of the others. Remember when opposing the war or the Patriot Act or whatever they were pushing thru was "unpatriotic"? Yeah, I'm still bitter about that. Not from the Gov, I expect propaganda from them, I mean from the foaming masses who regurgitated it with fury.

These policies did start under Bush, and have been highly supported by Republicans; I simply think those are facts that can't be ignored. That's not to put all the blame on them, but you could see the townsfolk amassing their pitch forks and torches and aiming them at Obama, and I just think it's silly.

BTW, Obama is a lousy liberal. I understand why the left might despise him, I just don't get why the Bush lovin' right do, other than team politics.

I think the truth in this thread comes from a donkey, of all people:

This is what it's about, the sports rivalry that politics has become. Both sides are guilty of it.

This is why we are so easily bamboozled. The truth is I'm a low level conspiracy theorist. The big groundswell movements in this country, come through the bowels of bureaucracies, from entities that are not publicly elected and barely accountable to the public. These entities that hold real power (military industrial complex, foreign relations, energy, international finance, etc) certainly aren't going to submit to the vagaries of terms and elections, and the whims of we, the ignorant, unwashed masses. Why would they? Look how foolish, gullible and distractible we are.

"You know, by the time you become the leader of a country, someone else makes all the decisions. ... You may find you can get away with virtual presidents, virtual prime ministers, virtual everything." -- Bill Clinton

Richard Nixon - Staunch anit-communist and fiscal conservative - opens relations with communist China and massively extends social programs.
Reagan - Down to earth, Fiscal conservative, promises to balance budget - Dementia, astrology, wife half in charge, balloons deficit.
Clinton - Democrat, presumably will increase gubmint oversight - repeals Glass-Steagall
W - Reduce government. We will not nation build - Nation builds, creates the largest government bureaucracy in history.
Obama - New way of doing things. Transparency - Nothing new, nothing transparent, stauncher conservative than his predecessor.

Forget what they say, forget what you expect of them, they do what they're told by the powers that be. And the same is true for congress, who repeatedly rubber stamp things they're briefly "briefed" on, don't read and don't understand.

Look nigs, there's not going to be any "hope and change", or "mornings in America", etc. What there is going to be is increased "security" spending, increased surveillance, increased debt, increased fracking, increased globalism, increased disparity of wealth, increased theater of partisanship, and of course ever increasing confusion as to why things keep going in a singular direction in spite of us being such a "divided" nation.

Peace be with you mother fuckers.

I remember when the patriot act was first passed. It was supposed to be sunsetted after ten years.

We are fucked.

The problem is these pattern of life tracking systems Just Work. There are nutcases and bad guys in the United States, as I type right now, that are planning to make crazy shit go down. Blow up levees, bomb public events, send mass mailing ricin-grams, and etc. They are planning, planning, planning.

It's hard to pull off the really good stuff without some coordination, i.e., without communicating over the nets. There's encryption available so the messages are not easily, readily readable if you want to make them such, but where the messages are coming from and going to is pretty easy to track. No harder than watching cars going by on the road. Hard to see in the trunk, easy to see the license plate. You can learn a lot that way.

Stuff is being caught by these nets. It works to keep us safe. Fact. People would be dead without them right now.

I also know that every power that can be abused does end up getting abused at some point. Trust in secret courts to review? Meh.

One positive thing is our top secret world has gotten so huge with so many people working in it, that you actually have a huge body of Average Joe Citizens with eyes on the process.

If I were working on a sniffing algorithm, looking for text that I don't recognize (encrypted) would definitively be a huge trigger for further monitoring.

Reminds me of how a civilian in Europe was able to "track" a US stealth aircraft traversing European airspace. He was able to identify and track a "shadow" of radar returns that should have been there based on all of the other traffic.

Not me. I KNOW what's going on and I don't have to expound. If I had it to do over, I would have gotten a vasectomy when I saw my first pubic hair,

UNDISCLOSED—In the midst of the ongoing national debate over the recently revealed NSA surveillance of American citizens, a Yemeni al-Qaeda operative currently living covertly in the United States told reporters Tuesday that he totally understands why the issue is so incredibly complex and multifaceted.

Claiming that the discussion is “not cut and dry by any stretch of the imagination,” the al-Qaeda operative told sources that because the risk-reward is not measured in dollars and cents, but rather in the lives of innocent people he’s trying to murder, the issue should be carefully considered from every angle.

“I’ll give you an example: So, I’ve been planning a pretty devastating attack on American soil for the past few months—I can’t tell you where exactly, but let’s just say somewhere in the Pacific Northwest,” said the terrorist, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity.

“Regardless of your view on the matter, the important thing is that this discourse about security and privacy is now taking place,” the terrorist told reporters. “But if I were you, I would definitely get these issues sorted out before the morning of July 27th.”
Don’t believe everything you think.
