Depending on the type of kid he is... Watch, rifle, tool box. He off to college or joining the workforce?
If you go the watch route don't skimp, you want to give him something that hell be happy and proud to pass on to his son. Sea or speedmaster would work. You can probably find a nice preowned speedy for under 2k. No matter what go mechanical or choose a different gift.
A ride to the recruiter for the service of his choice or college. (Unless they are extremely talented in music, arts or sports.)
I'll give my boys 3 months and then they better be on their way or they will work for me and I will make them miserable until they decide education or service beats slavery.

The Kitty Kat always get's them in the mood.
Funny story about ketamine. My house has a Japanese teahouse style cottage in the back, nothing fancy, but until the day comes when I convert it to my family dojo, we are renting it out. I rented it out to a rather pathetic anesthesiologist (what could go wrong, amirite?). He went out of town and asked us to feed his cat, so we do. Mostly my wife does it, and she wouldn't know a line of sugar from a line of cocaine, but one day I go in there. He's got this cat scratching tower. I look inside for the cat and it is STUFFED full of boxed vials of ketamine and morphine suflate. Thousands and thousands of them. And I'm pretty sure that's not recommended best practice for the stuff.
Not long after that, he was shown the door.

It is our job to see that it stays there." - George Orwell
