Right now I'm drinking

Re: Right now I'm drinking
This is a little more harsh (i think) than the other things I have been trying. I could not sip it "neat." Adding one ice cube helped. A second ice cube made it quite nice.
I am going to try to pick up a few different whiskey's and do an in-home tasting.
I have noticed that that I do like adding an ice cube more than I like adding dabs of water. Water releases the flavor more, but I just like my drinks cold.

I know little about scotch but offer the following for your tasting consideration in the bourbon and Irish categories:theAbstract wrote:Still figuring out the different tastes in whiskey, scotch, bourbon, etc.

Evan Williams Single Barrel is pretty damn good and a great bargain
Buffalo Trace is also a very good bargain and quite tasty
Red Breast is a great Irish whiskey but it's not cheap.
I discovered each of these fine spirits via the liver rotted denizens of IGx.

Had this again. Its a perfectly good beer but on reflection I prefer Dale's. Bluepoint hit where they were aiming with this tasty unique beer (Its described as a "Belgian IPA"; I'm not sure if that's accurate but it is like a combo of Belgian white ale and american pale ale/IPA). But for a go-to beer to keep in the fridge its hard to beat Dale's.davidc wrote:
Even better than Dale's (and its the same price).
It's like a combo of Dale's and Allagash White.

Thanks for the recommendations. I am going to have to give those a try.I know little about scotch but offer the following for your tasting consideration in the bourbon and Irish categories:

I heartily second Dr. Burroamore's three recommendations. I have both EW and Redbreast in my modest liquorioum at this very moment.theAbstract wrote:Thanks for the recommendations. Try it if you're someplace where you can get it. Damn good. Their Moon Man Pale is smooth, but not too hoppy-- still very drinkable.

Re: Right now I'm drinking
Couple Sunday brews

Doesn't seem nearly as good as the White Birch berliner weisse, but it's been a while since I had that. Pretty tart without being overly so and I love this style of beer during the summer. May have to try and gather up 4 or 5 and do a side by side one of these days.

Meh... been off the IPAs for a while so this isn't exactly a fair shake. I just really wanted to see what the Firestone hype was all abou since all i'd ever had was the Sucaba. Doesn't really seem better than I remember the DFH 90 or Port Mongo.

The Double Jack sucks. Overrated beer.

That's probably a little harsh, what makes it suck? I didn't think it was bad, definitely had a good balance. Just nothing mind blowing for a DIPA. If you're just chasing mouth numbing hops it's probably not going to work out.theAbstract wrote:The Double Jack sucks. Overrated beer.
Edit: agreed that it's probably overrated on ba... which is why I picked it up to begin with.

Probably a bit too harsh. I should say it sucks relatively. It is probably an average Double IPA. But average for a beer that is supposed to be outstanding kind of sucks.Fuzzy Dunlop wrote:That's probably a little harsh, what makes it suck? I actually think that it is a bit too balanced. I am not looking to mouth assaulted by hops, but there needs to be a presence.
I love their Wookey Jack black IPA. And the standard Double Barrel Ale is great.
Re: Right now I'm drinking
Haven't had this in awhile. Not an everyday beer, but I like it for a change of pace. Goes well on a hot day.
Re: Right now I'm drinking
I wasn't crazy abut this when I first had it, it grew in me. It's the best beer available at a local craft pizza joint, and it's double the size of their other craft brews...so I've given it a second chance or two and now I like it.theAbstract wrote:

Had this again a few times this week on vacation. This is such a great summer beer / session ale. It reminds me a lot of New Belium's Shift. Is not complicated but what it does, it does well. It's the perfect beer to have with seafood on vacation.davidc wrote:![]()

Re: Right now I'm drinking
I didn't want to drive to the liquor store the other day so I just walked up to the closest thing to me, a Rite Aid. Saw this and figured it had been a while since i'd given SA a chance. It was disgusting. That lemon dish soap/coriander taste is very prevalent in the White Rye and (as I'm sure most know) the summar ale. The porch rocker also had hints of the nasty artificial lemon and was as bad as (probably worse than) the Leinenkugels summer shandy. Bluberry beer was gross. The Belgian session was the only drinkable beer out of the varietals. I hadn't had a Boston Lager in quite some time, they were ok. I like pilsners if I'm going to drink lager but this was a worthy revisit at least. Don't waste your money. Next time i'll walk another 4 blocks or buy some bud heavy. Disappointment.

What is that fuckin nasty lemon/coriander/fennel seed taste? It's really not good.

The "Perfect Manhattan" w/bourbon served up. Decided to try something different while on vacation. Now I know why I focus on my spirits neat. This is dangerously good.

I've had buddies give me shit for saying it (a lot see it as a girly drink) but when made correctly these things are fucking delicious and pack a punch.DrDonkeyLove wrote:The "Perfect Manhattan" w/bourbon served up. Finished my Bulleit 10 year last night.
Damn it was good.
I need a good scotch. Only had it once.

Find out if you like peat, pick up a bottle of Ardbeg or Laphroaig and pour a few glasses (both are reasonably priced single malts). The campfire band aid may be offputting at first, like a super-hoppy beer, buy after a few days you may find yourself craving that taste.Ed Zachary wrote:Finished my Bulleit 10 year last night.

Re: Right now I'm drinking
I just learned that a liquor store by me will let you sample, gratis. May be governed by state/local laws, but they have a whole cabinet full of open liquor, there for the tasting. Wondering why it took them so long to let me know. . . .Fuzzy Dunlop wrote:Find out if you like peat, pick up a bottle of Ardbeg or Laphroaig and pour a few glasses (both are reasonably priced single malts). Re: Right now I'm drinking

Jim Beam Rye. This is not bad at all. Goes down smooth. I am no expert, but as a newbie it tastes good.
Finished my bottle of Evan Williams...and promptly bought another. By the end I was digging that flavor, a lot.
I am starting to develop a taste for this whiskey stuff.....and I am liking it.
Based on earlier recommendations de Dr.D_el I made a trip to the local BevMo and bought some Buffalo Trace. Red Breast was out of my league.
What I like doing right now is opening two different bottles and running my own tasting session. Having a nice time comparing tastes, seeing what is what.
But tonight it is just the Jim Beam Rye.

Re: Right now I'm drinking
Is that a camera color issue, new packaging, or different JB Rye? Didn't this stuff used to come in a bright yellow label?
Good enough to drink straight up or are you mixing?

Re: Right now I'm drinking
There was three kings into the east,
Three kings both great and high,
And they hae sworn a solemn oath
John Barleycorn should die.
They took a plough and plough'd him down,
Put clods upon his head,
And they hae sworn a solemn oath
John Barleycorn was dead.
But the cheerful Spring came kindly on,
And show'rs began to fall;
John Barleycorn got up again,
And sore surpris'd them all.
The sultry suns of Summer came,
And he grew thick and strong;
His head weel arm'd wi' pointed spears,
That no one should him wrong.
The sober Autumn enter'd mild,
When he grew wan and pale;
His bending joints and drooping head
Show'd he began to fail.
His colour sicken'd more and more,
He faded into age;
And then his enemies began
To show their deadly rage.
They've taen a weapon, long and sharp,
And cut him by the knee;
Then tied him fast upon a cart,
Like a rogue for forgerie.
They laid him down upon his back,
And cudgell'd him full sore;
They hung him up before the storm,
And turn'd him o'er and o'er.
They laid him out upon the floor,
To work him further woe;
And still, as signs of life appear'd,
They toss'd him to and fro.
They wasted, o'er a scorching flame,
The marrow of his bones;
But a miller us'd him worst of all,
For he crush'd him between two stones.
And they hae taen his very heart's blood,
And drank it round and round;
And still the more and more they drank,
Their joy did more abound.
John Barleycorn was a hero bold,
Of noble enterprise;
For if you do but taste his blood,
'Twill make your courage rise.
'Twill make a man forget his woe;
'Twill heighten all his joy;
'Twill make the widow's heart to sing,
Tho' the tear were in her eye.
Then let us toast John Barleycorn,
Each man a glass in hand;
And may his great posterity
Ne'er fail in old Scotland!
