Danny Way: Waiting For Lightning
Fantastic documentary on skateboarder Danny Way. Builds up from his childhood to his jumping The Great Wall of China. Really great doc and very interesting even if you aren't into skateboarding.
P.S. Skateboarders are some tough motherfuckers.

Day is a tough little fucker too. I remember him as a kid at McGill park in San Marcos.

Re: Danny Way: Waiting For Lightning
Amazing film.
Danny Way has been skating since I was a kid. That's crazy. I know Jason Ellis considers Way to be the best skater that ever lived.
I got this on OnDemand a while back and would definitely watch it again it was so good (it is down a ways on my Netflix queue).
Some other good skate docs:
- Rising Son: The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (my favorite skater when I was young...brought down by "fame")
- Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator (about murderer Gator Mark Ragowski)
- Bones Brigade: An Autobiography (Rodney Mullen is an unexpected amazing character in this film and the Search for Animal Chin is still the all-time greatest skate movie. I still have every Bones Brigade movie on VHS in boxes somewhere...except Animal Chin which is sitting on display on a shelf in the other room)

I've been wanting to see that Bones Brigade doc. I know Ellis worships Tony Hawk as well but the stuff that Way has done is unbelievable.
T.O.M., who are you talking about? Day?

I think he just typo'd Danny Way's name.
He is old with shaky fat little fingers.

T.O.M., you skated with Way back in the day?! Cool! So how was it? Not just skating with Way but the whole scene?

Re: Danny Way: Waiting For Lightning
When I first got to CA Mike. McGill had a park open in San Marcos. All the vert guys were there but there were so many great unknowns too. Obviously I skated in Oceanside a lot and GSD( Gary Scott Davis) was a big influence along with the Alva guys. H Street were mostly Vista guys (Hensley Way Schultes) . Tracker was still just off of 101 and you could get trucks and decks for 15 bucks.
I still ride a Jeff Grossly deck.

hahahaha! It does seem that way so far.
Btw, I've been checking out some Ryan Sheckler vids and that kid is pretty badass.

Bad ass or not I find him to be a very dislikable figure IRL. Reminds me of Bieber-lite in the way he carries himself. Fuck him.
I'll stick with Rodney Mullen...

I can see that possibly. He does seem like somewhat of a pretty boy. He's been getting a bunch of tats. He does do a lot of good with his Sheckler Foundation though.T200 wrote:Bad ass or not I find him to be a very dislikable figure IRL. Reminds me of Bieber-lite in the way he carries himself. All I know is every time I've heard him on Ellis he comes off like a dickbag.

Like most radio twats he just takes getting used to and then he becomes a fun twat.

I can see where EZ is coming from sorta with Ellis but there is something I like about the guy. Yeah, he gets on my nerves sometimes but I just really like the show overall. They give him a lot of shit but Raw Dog is the key to the whole show imo.
Re: Danny Way: Waiting For Lightning
100% agreed. He is a carbon copy of my most awesome intern at the Velocity I used to work at. That dude was/is crazy fun just by existing.Mickey O'neil wrote:They give him a lot of shit but Raw Dog is the key to the whole show imo.

Re:
I go back and forth on Tully. Sometimes I think he is great and other times I think he is a thinks-he-knows-it-all prick. I kinda liked it all with just Jason and Josh.Shafpocalypse Now wrote:The Ellis show improved dramatically when they put Tully back on too.
I think Raw Dog is the keystone of the show too.
I watched the video of when Taintstick or whomever it was beat the fuck out of that goth band at Ellis mania and laughed like crazy
Re: Danny Way: Waiting For Lightning
At first I thought Tully brought some good sense to the show but of late he has been annoying the fuck out of me.
He presents any answer he gives as authoritatively correct and on the shit I know he is generally way fucking wrong. So I'm going with know-it-all prick.
Regardless I listen to the show every day and will continue to do so. Like most such shows (Stern included) they are heavily guest-dependent to spark my actual interest. I also like Dingo and Rude Jude when they are on. Dingo is particularly funny to me (and not to my wife)...he brings out Ellis's funniest material imo.

Stern is only on (new) like a max of 6 times a month so you are a DIEHARD.
Me too.
