This list is all kinds of bullshit at least where New York is concerned. There is no where in NY that compares with most real ghettos since Guiliani. Although some places are slipping. Harlem (and especially 125th) are super gentrified. The worst neighborhoods in the five boroughs now a days' are in the Bronx (places like Mott Haven, Port Morris, any Precinct that starts with a 4) and Brooklyn ( East New York, Brownsville any Precinct that starts with a 7). Far Rockaway is pretty shitty as well. None of these neighborhoods can hold a candle to some of the places in the "Greater New York Area" however. Straight Path Road in Wyandanch on Long Island, Parts of Bridgeport in Connecticut and Newark and Jersey City put our Ghettos to shame.

Cool guy.
That's who's pickin' me up at the airport. It's one of their comps.

Great guy.

I often get random phone calls as sketchy folk are following him to the train, "Just in case something happens, I want someone on the phone."
Yeah, iirc the area where he was at wasn't bad, but on BART, you can get on at one stop and be fine, then at the next stop feel like you probably should have driven instead.

The bay area is a weird place like that.

I'm in Stockton today, btw. Haven't seen a street fight yet, but that's still time.

Meanwhile, the NAACP wants a DOJ investigation launched into that Missouri rodeo clown who put on an Obama mask.

Well, Park Slope and Windsor Terrace start with 7s, so they aren't all bad. My cousin is in the 71, in Crown Heights, and that is still very rough, although I'm told it varies by block.
I've been spending a lot of time by Franklin Ave, in the 77, and I've never seen so many cops hanging around, but not much seems to happen.
A friend who lives in Park Slope told me there has been a sharp up-tick in break ins there.
Now that stop and frisk is over, I expect that there will be an up tick in everything, everywhere.
As for LI, I believe Bellport between Sunrise Highway and Station Rd is the highest crime area in Suffolk.
My parents wouldn't let me attend Fordham in the late 80s, but I ended up at Hofstra, and I can't imagine Hempstead was all that much better.

You are correct. I shouldn't have said any, I should have said most.

South Shore LI has some choice Ghettos. Roosevelt, Hempstead, Amityville, Brentwood, Huntington Station (sort of in the center).

As long as you don't get off the BART at the Oakland stops (stadium excluded, at least on game days), you should be fine. If you're driving, it's pretty easy to tell the ghetto areas. Go see an A's game if you can-- best home crowd in baseball, and the Voice Of God.

meh. I take the train from Macarthur every day and have yet to be violated by packs of roaming neee-grows. Mind you, there are parts of Oakland where I wouldn't feel safe without a team of SEALS on overwatch, but there are plenty of parts that are fine.

I would be surprised if Park Slope became a problem area. My girlfriend lives there and while her family isn't rich, it is mostly filled with wealthy people. Quite nice area.

I went to Fordham, although I was based at the Lincoln Center campus so I wasn't in the Bronx too often. A lot of my classmates got mugged going out on Saturday nights so Central and South Bronx are the only areas I tend to avoid in the 5 boroughs at night.

I've run through the vast majority of Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan at most hours of the day and to be honest there are very few places I straight out avoid while running.

I doubt Park Slope will become dangerous again, but it is a great place to go and break into a well off persons home and take their shit.
And the park itself provides a nice refuge for criminals to hide in.
You never know.

The only place I've had a constant bad vibe from was the Tenderloin in SF. First trip there I didn't know shit about the neighborhoods, booked a (perfectly nice) hotel near Union Square. Not near enough, it was on the northern edge of the TL - not so bad by itself but a block south was crackhead city. Not so bad during the day but at night it seemed even rougher.

Yeah, that's not a bad stop. I would usually get on in Dublin and then head in to the City from there. The Oakland stops on that line weren't too bad.

Honestly, I'm more concerned with BART cops than most of the people on the train. After Messerle (sp?0 shot that dude on NYE a few years back, there were a few incidents involving BART cops that made them look very Keystone-like. Shot some dude, IIRC, a few blocks away from the BART station, tasered the wrong guy... a little nuts.

I remember being 17 and visiting a friend in the hospital with my very petite, very pretty, very white girlfriend at the time and taking a wrong turn and ending up in a fucking warzone in Oakland. Fuck a stop sign.
