Elmore Leonard, RIP

Post by baffled »

I think our own writer was an acquaintance of his. Bummer. Seemed like a cool, interesting dude. And Justified is tits.

Some pictures of him signing books and stuff.

A decent obit at Grantland.

I've been meaning to pick up a couple of his books.

Justified is a much better than average show.

First year was the best, in my opinion. 'Kinda' hard not to jump the shark
with that kind of show.

RIP. Let's not forget that Uncle Charlie starred in Leonard's Mr. Majestyk. EL would have been right at home here on IGX, had he not been so busy, like you know, doing stuff.

Get Shorty and Out of Sight are great books to start with. For those of you that cant or don't read, the movie versions are also pretty good.

fun fax:

my dad works as a freelance book editor. He was once hired to do some editing work on one of EL's books. According to my dad, there was nothing he could do: the book was pretty much as tight and well-written as it was going to get.

His 10 rules for writing has truly been regurgitated as much as one thing could ever be.

It's a pretty cool article though.

He wrote pretty great Westerns too. Hombre may be the most underrated Western novel and movie of all time. Valdez is Coming is pretty great as well.

I never met Elmore Leonard, but I have admired his writing for 4 decades and have mentioned him here often. He was such an adept stylist that I still will not read him in the evening because my morning's work begins to look like a poor Elmore Leonard parody. (The secret is all about the gerund. Oh, and a certain minimalism. Two of his rules: don't write the stuff people skip over. And: if it sounds like writing, cut it.)
