Iron Garm History question

Post by Bob Wildes »

Who started this site? I know Dan Belcher,sp, was the original "Garm Olafson" and he started IronGarm
in its original form. It seems like it let it tank shortly after getting hounded by a real Force Recon Marine.

Then it was resurrected by one or more guys that thought old Uncle Garm was a marvelous troll.

So what is the real skinny?

It went from DD to Microsoft groups in 4 or 5 versions because of @,.. then here. Garm paid the initial server/domain,.. then it was kept up technically by Dave Randolph, then Mario via connection to Steve Cotter.

No. Not @. It was -S-.

Was it b/c of @ or b/c of -S- "with a hint of pecs" ?

If he were so inclined, I would nominate HVLN as an IGX historian.

-S- is a fellow whose real name is Steve Friedes. He is a Jew DD suck ass who kept getting our MSN free forums(started by a few of us banned for violating Pavel's code of conduct) shut down because he doesn't believe in anti semetic stuff, racism, religious denigration and all the kind of shit that is cherished here on IGx. So Garm found a free server in the Republic of China of all places that would allow our "free speech". Hence IGx was born and lives on!!

Nutshell:

By 2003 or so, the signal to noise ration at Dragon Door was getting pretty high, and at the same time moderation there was getting stricter when it came to "non-classy" content. This guy WarpedMind started a short-lived "off topic forum" which was the earliest version.

A little while later Garm starts a MSN board called IronGarm. This gets shut down pretty quickly. Then IronGarm2, IronGarm3, 4, are made as previous ones are shut down, and it turns out Steve Freides (~s~) is complaining to to MSN about some of the content, and says so.

Garm sets up an offshore hosting account for IronGarmx that won't get turned off due to TOS violations.

After a few more years, Some guy called DeepRecon shows up inquiring about Garm's recon claims. This kid Ricky had been getting kick-monkey'd for a couple years on DD for questioning Garm's story, and finally went to this guy who actually investigated alleged fakers. His story holds up for a while, but it becomes apparent that Garm had been hoodwinking people for a long time. His participation drops until he eventually disappears, occasionally popping back in. Tech issues are handled by Dave, and then Mario.

Spells....back then you went by your real name. First name Stephen. Due to my Alzheimers, I can't remember your last name. What is it?

Ok I was mistaken. I thought @ and -s- was Rant ( didn't understand the symbols).

Good info on that twit, but do you have backstory on Rant's deal?

I remember when the early versions of IGX would get shut down, someone would post at DD advising where to find the new version. There'd be a reference to "the bad place." Sometimes, when this site is down, I've wondered where we could go to find out status.

Steve "-S-" Freides has been a kettlekweer par excellance and generally self righteous pain in the ass for many years, dating back to the mfw days.

If you have any idea of what a fucking cesspit mfw was, the fact that -S- stood out from the background noise should give you some idea of how annoying he is.

I searched IGx for the Freido Egg, but found this thread that gives visual expression to the later Garm years at IGx:

While I respect teh history of my favorite online forum (the only one I visit, incidentally), there's really only one burning question on my mind in terms of IGx history-

Did Hop Sing ever manage to weasel his little, yellow tallywhacker into Dirt Diva's bright-orange-dyed (I'm assuming) bearded clam?

Was such an event covered here? For my own morbid curiosity.

That's what I want to know.

Not only did his participation drop but he might have pulled the plug on the server at some point in response to the Deep Probing he was receiving.

Garm then passed the forum off to Lich, whose tenure was notable only for Doughboy being banned for attacking the site. The allegations against Doughboy were supported primarily by claims from Lich's service provider that the attacks were coming from Doughboy's IP address. Eventually, Lich found out that the IP addresses didn't actually point back to Doughboy and the ban was lifted.

@ is Gene. That's when he was lecturing PL54Jack Reape,(Captain, USN) about the horrors of war. Jack named him @ and it stuck.
