(CBS 3/ AP) A US Airways jet heading from Los Angeles to Philadelphia was diverted to Las Vegas on Tuesday and searched after reports of a security breach at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.

"About 5:40 a.m. (PST), a suspicious item was found during passenger screening," said Marshall Lowe of Los Angeles World Airports, the L.A. city agency that operates L.A.X.

35-year-old Fadhel Al-Maliki of Atlantic City, New Jersey was searched and found to have been secreting items in a body cavity, officials said.

Authorities say Al-Maliki had a suspicious device stuffed into his rectum when he tried to board US Airways Flight 1422 in Los Angeles.

"The items that were discovered and the manner in which they were secreted on his body were alarming," said Larry Fetters of the TSA.

The F-B-I says Al-Maliki immediately told screeners about the device he was carrying when he triggered an alert. He told screeners it was a therapeutic device. Officials say the device had a wire and what may have been a magnet concealed in his rectum.

The items, described as a magnet and wires, were seized from his person and examined by the Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad.

While authorities were investigating Al-Maliki, the flight to Philadelphia with 153 people departed without him, however, his luggage remained on the plane, prompting the pilot to make an unscheduled landing at McCarran International Airport around 8:30 a.m. PST.

The Airbus A320 was parked in a secure area away from terminals and underwent a search by authorities, said Chris Jones, a spokesman for McCarran International Airport.
