The AK 47

Here is a link to my favorite AK 47 optic mount. I find the combloc side mounts to be meah.

More tomorrow on the peoples rifle.

What they didn't tell you is in order to get that level of dependability, the AK had to be designed and manufactured with a serious lack of mechanical tolerance. This is why almost every AK is useless beyond 200 meters.Bob Wildes wrote:Never fired it. Just recall hearing several senior Marines state that the gooks could drag it through all kinds of shit, never p.m. it and it would still fire.

I've seen Aks that shoot 4 MOA (or worse) regardless of the ammo used and strapped down to a bench.
Don't get me wrong. I love the rifle system and own several of them.

Re: The AK 47
In the event of natural disaster and/or government collapse, after which the urban masses turn into roving bands of outlaws, the AK-47 would certainly be good enough, especially for engagements at < 200m (as cited by BB).
I know it's a cliche, but if the lights go out and the EBT cards stop, the ghost of Thomas Hobbes is going to rise up and sow death and mayhem at every opportunity, uttering, "Bellum omnium contra omnes" along the way. Accounts from Hurricane Katrina are what woke me up. If I'm wading through toxic floodwaters, volcanic ash, or nuclear fallout, the AK would be a strong option.
The AR-10 or AR-15 would still be my first choice, though.

As I posted in the AR15 thread. Ammo selection is very important.
Most 7.62 x 39 rounds are no where as effective as people would like to believe.
AK74? Yeah, that's the rifle I would buy if I wanted a cheap semi auto that will never quit and regular FMJ rounds will fuck you up.

I have been told it does lose a little something when you can't use it in full auto, was told to thin of it as a sub machine gun with more ass and a bit longer range.
I have always shot well with them.
I like them with folding stocks because as an end of the World gun, I'd carry it for up close but use a real rifle, like a good deergun for longer, more accurate and focused shooting. Over 300yards, a bolt action is fine. Under 100, out comes the Choppa!

Function dictates function Darth. The Ak47 as available to most Americans is a semi auto rifle with 0-300 meter capabilities. So long as the Ak is configured correctly and you are using the right.
An Ak47 with a side mounted 1-4x or just 4X scope, using modern ammo, basic chinese chest rig, and European steel mags is exactly what the doctor ordered for most people. The rifle is built like a tank and will allow you complete most tasks moderately well.
That is what I'd have if I could own only one weapon, wanted something I can hunt with, protect the family homestead and engage in some minuteman activities.

Not trust the labelling from these countries; they like to lie.
Water is your friend. A shot of water down the barrel, followed by a dry patch/ bore snake, and then gun oil takes care of this issue. Some procedure for the rest of the gun metal areas.
For a very "top to Bottom" cleaning use boiling water.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vz._58
VZ58 has more in common with the SKS. Both the vz58 and SKS are simular, but not the same as an AK47.
VZ58 features:
Milled receiver Rifle that is lighter than a stamped AK47
Magazines are little pricing, but still affordable
Bolt hold open- nice feature
Can reload with stripper clips- another nice feature
Only cons
optic mounting is problematic- just like an SKS, you had better have a shell deflector if you mount optics.
Side mount only like an AK47.
Most vz58 do not come with a side mount installed.
I opted to by a Sig556R instead, but that's only because I have a boat load of Ak mags.
IMO- buy one with confidence.

This ^^. A very fun shoot. Intimidating to privates who are used to the no-kick of a 5.56. There is definitely a reason it has been around forever and to my knowledge hasn't deviated much from initial design.

I've seen the effects of both up close and personnal. I know two former Rangers that were shot with 5.56. Both shot by friendly fire in training exercises. I was personnaly there for both events. One died; I saw him go down and stay down. The other was so fucking messed up he had to endure years of surgery to staple him back together. His insides had to be rearranged. 5.56, even FMJ 5.56, will mess you up if it yaws.SAR wrote:I've operated on people shot w each. On the flip side I have also seen the victims of 7.62 x 39 up close. I've also talked to the Delta Force medics that worked on the people on the receiving end of 7.62 x 39 and also to the Doctors attached to Delta.
I'll roll the dice and take an standard Russian AK FMJ round any day over 5.56. Chances are you're going to die with both. However, with 5.56 there is a good chance you'll wish you had died.
Remember, what I'm comparing is 7.62 x 39 Russian FMJ against 5.56 FMj M855. IF the 7.62 x 39 is a Hollow Point, Soft point hunting round or Yugo M67; no fucking way.
