tonkadtx, I read over your recommendations and given my price range and my daughter's needs I think I am going to go with one of j-cubed's suggestions.
It is in my price range and has a dvd/cd. I was worried about it only having 2GB but after some quick research I don't think it is a big issue. Once again, she will be using it for school, streaming Netflix and playing music.
Any reservations?
I wouldn't really have any. It's been a long time, but I liked Asus laptops the last time I was looking for a windoze machine.
I also second whoever it was that likes Toshibas. I'm actually typing on one right now. It's over 6 years old and still runs like a top.
Either way, I wouldn't worry about it much. The one you linked is cheap enough that even if it only lasts her a couple years, you'll have gotten your money's worth. Not that $250 is something to sneeze at, but it's a lot different than building one for $1,000+, and when/if she goes to college, you hopefully won't cringe at the thought of needing to get her a more current model.

Nice. FWIW, I split time between this and my Macbook Air. The Toshiba was having some issues, but I just started uninstalling non-essential programs and it quieted down.
Let me know how you/she likes the Asus. I'm always in the market for cheaper laptops that I can take on business/leave at home/mess up without cringing etc.

No. That's a fine machine, especially for that price. The last thing I forgot to mention is find out how many peripheral ports it has. While most things are moving to wireless/bluetooth/etc. Having enough usb ports, a firewirre port, hdmi, etc. Is never a bad thing. Not a deal breaker, but something to consider.
