Bombing, no, but our hands weren't perfectly clean. Many loyalists and their families were beaten or killed either during or immediately after the war. Not on quite the same level, but there are multiple instances in which American militiamen executed British soldiers who had surrendered.Herv100 wrote:I don't think the American colonists who revolted against the king bombed public places killing innocent women and children.WildGorillaMan wrote:When the day comes that any of you anti-establishment types finally have to rebel for real instead of just sharing 2nd Amendment memes on Facebook do you think your armed band would be on par with the old ANC for the deeds you'd commit in the name of your people, or would your resistance be more Ghandi-esque?

It's interesting to see how the exact same crowd that sucks Wayne LaPierre's nuts quickly decides armed resistance against a tyrannical government is terrorism.Herv100 wrote:I don't think the American colonists who revolted against the king bombed public places killing innocent women and children.WildGorillaMan wrote:When the day comes that any of you anti-establishment types finally have to rebel for real instead of just sharing 2nd Amendment memes on Facebook do you think your armed band would be on par with the old ANC for the deeds you'd commit in the name of your people, or would your resistance be more Ghandi-esque?

One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

The ANC put tires filled with gasoline around the necks of their enemies and then lit them on fire. I'd have the common decency to just put a bullet in their brain basket or just hang them.
Totally fair point.

Nice strawman you're building there.
Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.

Re: Mandela died
Nelson Mendela should be appauled for what he did when South African white's gave up minority power. He did the exact opposite of what his enemies said (and expected) he would do and what his own party expected (and wanted) him to do.
Make no mistake, Mendela was a self described socialist. However, he was lucky to ascend to power during a time when the soviet bloc disentigrated. With that lesson in front of him; Mandela (the avid socialist) implement hardly any hard core socialist initiatives in South Africa.
He also was at heart a decent guy. Unlike many other "African Nationalist" leaders he left his office after 5 years and had no interest in being an African strong man. Truely rare for Africa.
His second wife Winnie was (and still is) a hard core communist nut job and a killer.

When I was in college in the mid-late 80's and South Africa was at a tipping point, the Young Republicans Club put up flyers around campus decrying the brutal tactics of the ANC. Essentially, "the whites may be bad, but behold the horrors of black communism!" I thought it was an elaborate trolling effort, and I think you're doing the same now. You don't believe that was a justified revolution? What exactly do you think they should have done? Asked more politely?Gene wrote:He died in bed. Different situation, LaSalle. The Continental Congress fought the British. They did not need to terrorize anyone but United Empire Loyalists, whom they did not necklace. They beat them and shot a few.lasalle wrote:Great logic. How many sit ins and work stoppages did the Continental Congress do?
Necklacing is a grotesque form of torture. You beat a person half senseless. You put a tire on them. You douse them in petrol. You set them on fire. It's a fucking primitive way to murder someone, meant to terrorize everyone.
The ANC fought the Boers. So did the Pan Africanist Congress. Until they were coopted so did the Inkatha Freedom party. All were fighting with each other too.
Very few whites suffered from terrorism compared to other blacks. The Spear of the Nation necklaced other blacks because they refused to acknowledge the supremacy of the ANC. They were not going to take orders from Xhosas, especially the Zulu.
The ANC gets the credit because the Soviets backed them and because stupid Progressives listened to their "fellow travelers" during the Cold War. They killed more of their fellow "sufferers" than they did Boers. Financed by the EU and others they won elections. The Big Mango got elected because he was the face of the ANC.
Joe Slovo ran the show because he was a commie from Lithuania who did the bidding of his friends in mother Russia. Figures - let the blacks take the heat while the white men run things.

Yeah, the IRA were alright really - a good model to follow. I know they were mostly made up of politically-ignorant gangsters who used crucifixion and knee capping as a means of increasing their reputation, but at least they spoke English and had a trust worthy skin colour. And yeah there was that awkward business about murdering a child in Warrington but he probably deserved it. As did those new recruit squaddies on their way from Catterick to Manchester. As did my mate's dad. Good lads the IRA.

It's called war, pain on all sides and a Republican can go on and on about all the catholic kids killed by Squaddies or how many times the Squaddies looked the other way while the Provos out IRAed the IRA.odin wrote:DrDonkeyLove wrote:Very interesting question. Bottom line though, they killed more of their enemies than their enemies got of them. Not too shabby if your looking at insurgency in a modern nation from a academic viewpoint.
From an operational level I respect the fuck out of PIRA just like I do the SAS. I think PIRA was fighting a stupid fight as there was a Republic of Ireland and can't see fighting for a few counties in the shittiest part of the Ilsand but the Irish are not known for cool headed logic.
PIRA being socialist I think hurt them as well.
The ARA will make them look like the out of work criminals many of them were IF it ever comes down to it here.

Re: Mandela died
As is our usual way, we've drifted from our original subject Mandela. Considering how divided South Africa could be, they seem to be handling this excellently. From BBC
Thousands of South Africans are expected to take part in a day of "prayer and reflection" for late President Nelson Mandela.
President Jacob Zuma will attend a service in a Methodist church in Johannesburg, with other multi-faith services planned throughout the day.
A national memorial service will be held on Tuesday, ahead of a state funeral on 15 December.
South Africans have been holding vigils since Mr Mandela died on Thursday.
President Jacob Zuma urged South Africans to go to stadiums, halls, churches, temples or synagogues on Sunday to remember their former leader.
"We should, while mourning, also sing at the top of our voices, dance and do whatever we want to do, to celebrate the life of this outstanding revolutionary who kept the spirit of freedom alive and led us to a new society. Let us sing for Madiba," he said, using Mr Mandela's clan name.

Mr Mandela's successor as president, Thabo Mbeki, will attend a service at the Oxford Shul synagogue in Johannesburg in the afternoon.
Other senior politicians and ANC officials will go to services across the city, and the country.
Although crowds have already been out in many towns and cities, the government and the ANC want to make more scattered communities feel more intimately involved, the BBC's James Robbins reports from Johannesburg.
