Ohh the Irony! Global warming quacks...

AP in with the assist, by not even mentioning what this ship of fools was doing. What were they up to? That is, when not playing secret Santa and planning on who to eat first? Why, they were studying disappearing Antarctica ice caused by global warming.
I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

Glad to see that this hasn't interfered with their sense of entitlement. The scientific team on board the research ship — which left New Zealand on Nov. 28 — had been recreating Australian explorer Douglas Mawson's century-old voyage to Antarctica when it became trapped. They plan to continue their expedition after they are freed, expedition leader Chris Turney said.

Adding to the growing evidence of climate change-induced poleward migration and/or expansion of many fish and terrestrial plant species, a paper published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal has found a massive expansion of mangroves in Florida.

Astoundingly, despite all evidence to the contrary, it seems like many people do.The Ginger Beard Man wrote:Does anyone actually believe the climate is supposed to stay the same?
Some of our supposedly scientifical progressives seem to look at the ideal temperature as what it was 50 or 100 years ago. A large percentage of those in the US & Europe are thinking these thoughts in a location that was beneath a mile of ice a mere 10K years ago.

the quotation says the source is a paper published "in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal." I didn't expect anyone to go read it--i didn't. i was just offering a scientific finding in the response to a random news story that tells us nothing about where the climate is headed.
as for the climate's remaining static, of course there has been climatic variation over the course of pre-history and history. it is only recently that humans have become a geophysical force, altering the climate in ways that pose costly risks to society worldwide.

http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v5 ... 12829.htmlThe mixing inferred from observations appears to be sufficiently strong to imply a climate sensitivity of more than 3 degrees for a doubling of carbon dioxide. This is significantly higher than the currently accepted lower bound of 1.5 degrees, thereby constraining model projections towards relatively severe future warming.
Commentary on article in above link: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/ ... ew=desktop
..unless emissions of greenhouse gases were cut, the planet would heat up by a minimum of 4C by 2100, twice the level the world's governments deem dangerous.
Of course, if you needed to zip your jacket yesterday, it probably means that the above is pure BS."4C would likely be catastrophic rather than simply dangerous," Sherwood told the Guardian. "For example, it would make life difficult, if not impossible, in much of the tropics, and would guarantee the eventual melting of the Greenland ice sheet and some of the Antarctic ice sheet", with sea levels rising by many metres as a result.

Besides, the big threat is not us.

Climate change efforts are misplaced.

All the article says is Amgen is having a hell of a time getting definitive results from cancer studies.
Not unique at all in all branches of science.
The re-re-redefining of what is climate change and its causes makes me suspicious.

Climate is likely changing, no matter who or what is causing it. Question is, what upheavals is it going to cause, and how to deal with those. One solution certainly is survival of the fittest, and if that is the one we default to, guess which side I want to be on.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/ ... JX20140103A Chinese icebreaker that helped rescue 52 passengers from a Russian ship stranded in Antarctic ice found itself stuck in heavy ice on Friday, further complicating the 9-day "roller-coaster" rescue operation.
I'm mostly in the "Climate change is real, but: how bad is it, how much do we have to do with it etc." camp.
We've had a fairly warm winter, for the most part, but we rarely get lower than about 45 around here anyway.
