This sort of thing appears in our college town bucolic burb's paper (so-and-so taken to hospital early Saturday or Sunday morning after being assaulted by unknowns) often enough that it is almost expected. Our cops are out and about, too. Got to have your wits about you at 2AM, which is often when you least do.
