Changes in what XL is?
In the mid 90s,when I ordered T-shirts from the land of the free I usually ordered XL.They allways fit perfectly, but now I have noticed that an XL is like wearing a tent.Is this something others have noticed? Have the normal american gotten that much bigger (fatter) just in a decade?

Americans have probably gotten fatter in the past decade, but I have not noticed XL shirts getting bigger.
The shirt issue might depend on what type of shirt you buy, For instance I bought several XL technical shirts for running in the 2003-2010 time frame. Runners are generally much skinnier than the average American. Other shirts for different activities may have gotten larger.

There's a thing called "vanity sizing," in which manufacturers mark their clothes a size down. I haven't noticed it much in shirts, but I have in pants. Dockers brand in particular. If you normally wear a size 38 pant, the 36 fits just fine.
Makes us fat Americans feel better about ourselves and isn't it all about self-esteem?

I wear an XL and tee shirts fit fine but vary a good bit - but trying to find a regular button up shirt to fit an XL sized chest that doesn't have the same XL size waist is nearly impossible - it seems they are all made for fat people. I can buy slim fit but all that does is make me need a XXL for the top and still have the same issue on the waist. I have enough material left over around the waist to make another shirt. I used to buy something called "tapered" - can't find anything like that now so I fold the sides over and tuck it in the back of my pants - looks bad and feels about the same. And I don't have nearly the difference many people do between chest and waist at 11". Have you guys found a brand that still fits well?

If you ever see a sign for "clearance" at a clothing store under the mens' section, it usually means, "we ordered too many fat guy shirts".
I wear an extra medium, and department stores typically don't stock that size well; you have to pay extra $$ and go to the brand name ones.

It really depends on your goal. If your goal is to maintain maximum fabulousness while having the freedom of movement to push kids out of an elevator-- you have to go custom.climber511 wrote:I wear an XL and tee shirts fit fine but vary a good bit - but trying to find a regular button up shirt to fit an XL sized chest that doesn't have the same XL size waist is nearly impossible - it seems they are all made for fat people. Stuff from duluth trading fits me pretty well. Pendleton is good too(vintage pendleton shit from ebay works-- the shirts lasts forever, and they weren't tailored for today's market).
If issues still exist, get the shirts tailored. Tailoring isn't very expensive, especially if you live near a military base with a lot of Korean owned tailor shops surrounding it (in my experience, these shops tend to always do great work-- other places are catch as catch can).
