Any Linux gurus here?
My sound is totally muted. Help! I don't know why or how to find where to turn it back on. Thanks

Re: Any Linux gurus here?
If you're running Ubuntu, run this command as root:
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
On RedHat, this may work:
service alsa restart
Or-
service alsa-utils restart
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

Thanks man, but I'm running Xubuntu 13.10 version. I tried all those for ubuntu and they don't work. Do you have a live tech support number with a live talking person who can tell me in two seconds and walk me through to where to go and which button to push?

Unfortunately I don't.Andy80 wrote:Thanks man, but I'm running Xubuntu 13.10 version. I tried all those for ubuntu and they don't work. Do you have a live tech support number with a live talking person who can tell me in two seconds and walk me through to where to go and which button to push?
That's odd, unless Ubuntu (and Xubunu) or Linux in general isn't using the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture anymore, or it's just changed. Still, BOOO.
Have you rebooted that fucker?
Re: Any Linux gurus here?
Yes but...nothing. A few days ago I updated to 13.10 and that's where the trouble began.. FUCK, I hate Linux, firefox and mazilla.

I wouldn't have thought that your Commodore 64 was capable of running Ubuntu.....Andy80 wrote:My sound is totally muted. Help! I don't know why or how to find where to turn it back on. Thanks

You ever seen a cycling plumber who wrestles with small calves, forearms and neck? Didn't think so.

Nice find sub, I will be interested in seeing the results when he posts backSubClaw wrote:http://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/
Re: Any Linux gurus here?
Thanks but how do I find where to do sound settings? Most of what they're talking about is greek to me.
I did find that ALS(now default) is a change from OSS but you have to re open OSS and do it manually. Go to the page and the page is blank and it won't open

OK, let's take a more direct approach. Do you know how to open the Terminal app?
If so, do it. Then type 'sudo -s' (without the single quotes), enter your password and then copy and paste this line (without the single quotes) 'killall indicator-sound-service;/usr/lib/indicator-sound-gtk2/indicator-sound-service'.
Let me know if that solves your problem.

Re: Any Linux gurus here?
No dice sub. terminal app takes me to a page nothing like you describe. I have the perfect solution for this. I'm just going to wipe Linux off my computer and have Windows reinstalled. All this stuff is way over my head and I'm not motivated to learn it. But thanks for your effort to help me with it.SubClaw wrote:OK, let's take a more direct approach. Re: Any Linux gurus here?
I feel your pain. Anyway, if you are willing to try, I would recommend you eOS (http://elementaryos.org), another Ubuntu fork shaped very much after Apple's OSX. Since its heart is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, you shouldn't be affected by the sound bug which appeared on 13.10.

Re: Any Linux gurus here?
Reads nice but with no sound for anything and sub titles in Spanish, I can't even get to first base. I've decided to forget about it, wipe off Linux all together(I'm hating it with a passion) and re-install Windows. It's been OK for a few months until the sound quit. If whenever anything goes wrong, it sucks big time to fix it. I've looked at a number of those forums and see that a lot of others have the same problem with the sound. It's no doubt about getting good sound to all the apps for all the new magic phones, tablets, etc.
But thanks for the effort to help, sub. Appreciate it.
