The descriptions of poverty in the article are of white Appalachia, but could be the Mexican dominated California central valley or black dominated Detroit.

The poor need to be lead or driven from poverty. What we are currently doing isn't working. Attempting to make the poor comfortable has only made things worse.

I'm going to put all my jokes and sarcasm aside for a moment, and do what Tom Furman tells me to do sometimes- "Let the adolescent stuff fade a bit."

It took me a while to learn how to be an adult. I'm still working on it but I believe I do have most of the basics down. And one of the things I've learned, is that the "Teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for the rest of his life" philosophy carries with it a lot of weight and Truthiness. And I like it quite a lot.

And I agree with you, when you assert that our current way of doing this does, in many respects, make poverty, and the suffering and crime which *can* go along with it, worse.

(I say *can* there, because I, and probably many of us, do know a few "poor" folks who don't suffer disproportionately, don't take government aid and don't commit crimes. I spent some time as a poor boy, making so little that I qualified for food stamps, but I never took ANY government aid, never committed crimes, and I also learned how to be happy with what I had, and that was cool).

Anyhow, the thing about the "Teach a man to fish..." philosophy, is that the man has to be willing to apply himself in "learning how to fish." And sadly, from what I observe, few are, due to the fact that after so many years of being handed a free lunch, and being mollycoddled by the state, there is a sense of entitlement. And it's really a shame.

Frankly, I, on those occasions where I applied myself, and accomplished a goal and was then able to look at what I had accomplished, and gained in the accomplishment, I always felt fulfilled and happy. And I do think that if THAT could be demonstrated, if these folks could be taught to set a goal, work for it and accomplish it, and they sensed that feeling of fulfillment, perhaps many would work to advance themselves.


It's weird. Once I took my eyes off of all the "stuff" I wanted, and started working hard not for the paycheck, but for the sense of fulfillment I got from doing a good job, I felt better, became more successful, and the paychecks started getting larger. Before I knew it, I wasn't poor anymore.
