Inside this thread, where a bunch of y'all have done shit that would make the eleetest of the eleet's toes curl, the sentiment that fuck, this is horrible but shit happens in competition does resonate.

Outside this thread, I am 100% okay with the average Joes and Janes I know assigning greater risk to big and small house CF competitions as a result of this. I know this is sort of well-trod ground here, but it would be almost impossible to overstate the incompetence and (sometimes unwitting) arrogance of the fuckheads who generally run shitshows like this. Caveat emptor and all that.
In the mill, getting down.

The list of things I and many of us have done and do fall under
• Do this long enough and you’re gonna die
• Keep this up until it maims me
• One more time and something is gonna blow
• If I keep doing this many more years I won’t have any joints left

But given all this most of us make every effort to minimize those risk factors that we can – and it sounds as if keeping a fairly clear area around someone doing high rep Olympic Lifting that are of course overhead lifts - should have been looked at a little better. The one thing Crossfit boxes usually have (in videos I have seen) is plenty of physical space to work with – so someone wasn’t on the ball when they set things up for this thing – there’s a reason an official Olympic lifting platform is so big and has to be kept clear of Everything. It’s usually the little things that jump up and bite you on the butt.

This is one of the single lasting "innovations" that will outlive CF I hope.

Crossfit is the biggest thing to come along in fitness in, what, 50+ years?

It's not going away anytime soon.

The guy was an allegedly experienced athlete and coach. He saw the list of events and decided to proceed, so if he'd dropped the bar on himself, and the equipment didn't fail, it's pretty much on him.

It sounds like that's not what happened. The organizers should have reasonably expected failed reps. It's not an athlete's responsibility to do any kind of safety check of the gear or event area to make sure he's in a safe environment. He's focused on competing. Stacking bumper plates behind the athlete looks an awful lot like negligence that a boilerplate waiver would not shield them from.

This is the sort of thing that's consistent with Couch's "yeah, this stuff can kill you, shit happens," uncle rhabdo mindset that is reflected from the top-down in @Fit's culture WRT safety and injuries. People are getting seriously injured. @fit isn't going anywhere, there's too much money to be made. But unless the descriptions of the vid are completely off, they just crippled another guy. Fuck them.

Where were the plates?

When they say "behind him", how much space are we talking about? I'm confused on why they are considered in regards to the drop?

A guy gets paralyzed and most of you can't get past your hate for @fit enough to actually not blame @fit for once.

Sure its risky; so is strongman, PL, bodybuilding, rock climbing, bike racing, football, rugby, etc.

I've broken bones playing rugby, I've gotten concussions and I've played with them. I herniated disks and tore a bicep training and competing in strongman. I've raced BMX and taken spills so bad I've gotten knocked out. The list goes on.

In competition the goal is to push yourself to the max and its the same principle as doing a medley to finish out a strongman contest when you are dead ass tired.

Get over yourselves for once, a good guy is paralyzed from a freak accident.

Someone has now uploaded a 5 sec video to you tube if you want to search for it.

Whatever the reason was and whoever's fault it was, this poor guy's life will never be the same again.

Go fuck yourself, a good deal of concern and good will has been expressed on this thread (especially from us.) towards this guy. While I think he competed in a dumb sport, no onew wished this shit on him and no one is laughing at him.

It's not a freak accident when it's largely do to the event staff not even having the sense of a fucking floor attendant at a fucking gym when it comes to setting up an area to do a fucking exercise.

Seriously, the fucking stereotypical Nike'd out ACE certified corporate gym PT even has more fucking sense than that.

Sure he has some responsibility and you'd have a better point if the set up did not contribute to the accident.

So yeah Cross Fucking Fit, itself has some blame because look at the dumber than a part time PT so called "Trainers" and staff they attract.

I'm not saying there needs to be any laws. If someone wants to do that stupid shit, knock themselves out.

And this shit does fit in with this whole fucking thread, from page 1 to

Video of accident
Slow gif of the accident

Frame rate is low but from the bar path and shifting of the plates looks like the bar bounced off the plates and onto his back.

Chanting "freak accident" doesn't change the fact it was preventable by having a cleared lifting area and reasonable fucking programming.

Nah. Go fuck yourself. Honestly. Sure people are wishing him well but at the same time using it to further their hate.

How many of you gave even a few bucks to help the guy out?

And I saw the video. The bar hit the plates after it hit him. The setup wasn't a factor in this tragic injury

Looked like he was maybe 2 feet from the back of a mat serving as the lifting area, with the plates within a few inches of the mat. Not enough space to dump, but he didn't dump the bar.

It looks like he just sort of let the bar go and it came down on him.

Some idiot above made a good point. There is a standard regarding uncluttered floor space and the dimensions of a lifting platform (8x8). If you dump outside of that or step outside of it, you're on your own. But if you're crowded into a little space or there is debris on the platform, there's some responsibility on the part of the contest sponsor.

Of course, there's also an issue whether you're an experienced enough lifter to know better than to lift in a crowded space. And whether Crossfit Inc gives any instruction on safety precautions and standards before rolling in dough from their silly affiliation scheme.

rapidly reassessing my own lifting space.

Always kind of liked the little rabbit warren style PL gym stuff but shit like this should be a wake up call for anyone.

The real question is who will be the first to do an @fit workout in the future: this guy or couch?

Just so you know, Olympic platforms are 4 meters x 4 meters, not 8 feet x 8 feet.

There is a common theory in aviation accident investigation that most airplane crashes are not the result of a single, catastrophic event, but rather, a series of smaller, almost insignificant events that all lead to the crash.
