Out of it senior citizen asks...
Where are teenagers finding their music these days? Not much on MTV anymore. Probably not radio. But they all seem to like the same stuff. And if they don't like it, they know it. So where do they hear it? 'Cuz I never heard of about 3/4 of the music that is currently popular.

If you know 1/4 of it then you're way ahead of me and I have a son in college. I'm about 95% deficient in pop culture knowledge. Luckily I don't much care.

Pandora, man.
I have a ton of groups I like, I get a lot of new ones from word of mouth by other folks who like similar groups as me, but the majority is pandora.
Plug in a station, and I'll usually jot down the names/albums I like, check out a few more of their tracks later, and then consider picking up an album or two.

Trust me-- you aren't missing anything and the brain cells and IQ points you're saving, from not being exposed to pop culture, will probably help prevent you from ever having to deal with shit like Alzheimer's disease.Cave Canem wrote:If you know 1/4 of it then you're way ahead of me and I have a son in college. They also probably don't have NPR on the presets in their cars. Different strokes.seeahill wrote:Where are teenagers finding their music these days? Not much on MTV anymore. Probably not radio. Radio is still the thing, it's just fragmented into OTA radio (your local Top 40 and hip-hop stations are still doing a booming business), Internet radio (from Pandora to Spotify to Google Radio) and satellite.
Youtube is the new MTV only better.

I listen to Spotify and Sirius/SM satellite radio. That's where I hear most of the new stuff. Alt Nation, Sirius XMU (indie channel) and some others and also YouTube/Vimeo/Vevo.

I imagine radio, the same as always, though nowadays it's increasingly online.

I asked my 13 y.o. grandson this question this morning as I drove him to school and we listened to the same shitty top 40 station that he always wants turned on. He said Youtube is the place where they find music.

90% of music discovery still occurs on radio. After discovery, though, all the other channels come into play

Not terrestrial radio. I hear songs on terrestrial radio that I first heard on satellite radio a year before. I heard that song 'Sail' by Awolnation at least a year, if not more, on Alt Nation on Sirius before it was popular on regular radio. For that matter, even on the "Top 40" stations on Sirius.BucketHead wrote:90% of music discovery still occurs on radio. After discovery, though, all the other channels come into play

If you haven't tried it, I highly suggest Songza. It's playlist-based, and they playlists for almost every mood, activity, occassion, genre, era, etc... I highly recommend it. I deleted all my other radio apps after I discovered Songza.

Yes, terrestrial. Satellite pure play accounts for maybe 5-ish% of discovery.Mickey O'neil wrote:Not terrestrial radio. The artists are the same, the platforms are just different.
Every normal kid hears the same normal stuff every normal platform plays.
