Book recommendations (muslim conquest of Europe)
Post by DrDonkeyLove »
Interested in the muslim conquest of Europe and how they were eventually repelled. Any recommendations for historical novels on this subject or well written history books will be appreciated.

It covers a lot of other things that you may or may not be interested in, but it covers what you are looking for from a broad perspective very well:
Belloc's The Crusades is also good.

I'm a big fan of this having recently read it for the second time -- Deus Lo Volt!: A Chronicle of the Crusades. I think it provides genuine insight into the crusader mindset.
I haven't really read much about the next half millennia or so leading up to the siege of Vienna. I assume that's the period the old assologist is interested in. I'm curious to see if there are any other suggestions.

I used to have book on the crusading orders. Lot's of good info on the fight against Islam. I'll have to dig through my books and find it for you.
Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.
I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

This is maybe a little side step to what you're looking for, but captivating. Certainly was not mentioned in history classes.

Notice he said Muslim conquest of Europe, not the Crusades.
Good question because it's easy to find stuff on the Crusades but not on the fact that the Ragheads started shit in Europe.

As I understand it, nobody in the West really cared the Muslim world much because it had fallen from prominence, almost nobody spoke the languages, and it's importance didn't fit into the Marxist version of history.DARTH wrote:Notice he said Muslim conquest of Europe, not the Crusades.

One of my all-time favorite history books is this one, but it primarily focuses on the Ottomans and their relationship with Europe. There's quite a bit of good stuff out there about the major battles if Doc is interested. Keegan's The History of Warfare covers quite a bit.

The blog, Gates of Vienna, gives a good idea of what's happening in Europe and elsewhere right now.
