Well, I made it 28 seconds in.

Last week my wife went to the huge annual rich neighborhood yard sale. While there she visited a home that had a regular beagle and one of these rescued beagles. Apparently they are bred to be smaller and quieter than regular beagles so there is less yapping & howling. The woman said the rescued beagle was a great dog with the only drawback being that it runs like hell when free.

Bravo beagle rescuers.

At least the testing shows great results, so it's totally worth it...

Viagra raises another interesting point. When it was tested in beagles, it caused severe stiffness. Not where it counted, but in the neck. Researchers referred to this as "beagle pain syndrome."

A survey of some 150 compounds that were produced by various pharmaceutical companies as prospective drugs, but were never marketed because of some sort of toxic effect in people, revealed that only 43 per cent of these drugs caused similar problems in rodents, and only 63 per cent did so in other animals.

Even if one wants to make the argument that testing beagles (and other companion animals) is a necessary evil, I'm not sure how any scientist who took Ethics 101 can justify not providing them with some vaguely decent life when possible - controlled outdoor space, etc.. Even fucking fake outdoor space to run and be dogs - there's an indoor dog park 10 miles from where I live that I guarantee doesn't have the funding of someone creating new drugs for Big Pharma.

There's a horrifying video (from PETA) of a hidden camera in a lab that was using beagles. Don't watch it. Just don't.

The thing that did me in was the body language, when they took the beagle and set him down in the grass for the first time in his life. He was scared. You could see it. The animal was terrified. It made me sad, beagles are some of the most outdoorsiest dogs, they were bred for hunting, being outside chasing stuff... It's what they do and that animal looked mortified, just being outside.

I knew that companies tested products on animals. But I didn't know that products were tested on dogs. I didn't know that dogs were living in cages in laboratories and were not only subject to testing, but were also denied their basic needs- like being outside to run, play and be dogs.

This video was an eye-opener.

My line of work brings an acuity for body language/posture/tension patterns/tone. Watching the dogs was tough, suddenly very dusty sitting here at my laptop.

We have a situation here in Oz where children refugees (as in, human children) are being held in detention for prolonged periods, for no better reason than political posturing. Parallels can be drawn, and it kind of brings it home.
