With the World Cup going full blown in Brazil, it amazes me how the quality of the game has not reached its full potential because of the poor levels of strength and conditioning worldwide. If you look at pro sports, football [soccer] is still in the dark ages in terms of optimal strength and conditioning levels. American football and ice hockey are at least 40 years ahead of them in terms of proper training methodology.

Poliquin is off his rocker. Soccer S&C guys might be 20 years ahead of the US for the most part. Take Mladen Jovanovic for instance, he does work with soccer players and uses extensive data acquistion methods to keep peak condition and monitor injury status.

fifa adopted biological profiling last year, and there is this recent report:

After Costa Rica sealed its surprise place in the knockout stage with a 1-0 win over Italy, seven Los Ticos players were called in for a doping test — the usual two as required of each team after every match, plus five more. FIFA said the additional five players were called in because they were among the nine percent of World Cup participants who had not completed their required pre-tournament testing.

They need more fish oil.

Can't remember who the interview was with, or where it was published, but I remember an American S&C guy who basically said that European soccer clubs were way ahead of Americans with their S&C practices.

Two things that I still remember:
1) They did a better job of planning training, so players were at their peak ability more often than most team athletes here.

2) They did a better job of screening players returning from injury and correcting imbalances, poor movement patterns etc.

Michael Bradley ran over 7 miles against Portugal. Even counting the last minute mess-up (not totally his fault, IMO), a pretty strong aerobic system is needed for that kind of effort.

"S&C" as an independent quality seems like a definition made just to advance the training industry

Fuck, I'm having a hard time letting this go. Jay's absolutely right, Rooney gets a lot of flack for his lack of discipline.

And the thing is, Rooney's still been a world-class player for 10+ years. Saying that he's not as good as Ronaldo, one of the two or three best players in the world, a generational talent, well, so what? That's like saying "that Clyde Drexler, he was no Michael Jordan." It's true, but it misses the point. And if you look at Ronaldo play, it's not his abzzzz that make him a great player.

Shit, pretty much the one thing that everyone will say about the American side is that their conditioning is top notch. They're one of the, if not the, strongest, best-conditioned teams in the tournament. The reason that they're not picked to go very far is that they lack players with a whole lot of creativity or touch. So it might intuit well that conditioning, while important, isn't the most important thing. Poliquin's just fucking trolling with this shit.

Rooney is a superb player who has played better than people who had "superior" conditioning.
