I'm not sure where some of you get your Tea Party information. The movement centered around concern for the growing national debt*, and attracted a combo of libertarians and fiscal conservatives. Given their libertarian influences, Tea Party sympathizers (including me) care more about civil liberties than Joe Sixpack or that former Constitutional Law lecturer from the U. of Chicago.

End the war on drugs; legalize pot entirely and legalize possession of the rest.

Re: Making po po less militirized
Surprisingly this evening's network news on NBC displayed some video from Ferguson that was not flattering to law enforcement...particularly the SWAT sniper on top of an armored vehicle, scoping the crowd that was peacefully milling about. I shit you not. I don't want to talk to much shit here but I can assure you I would have been arrested if I was there and saw that motherfucker pointing a high-powered sniper rifle at the crowd scoping out targets FOR NO FUCKING REASON. I would have went ape-shit. I hope the people in Ferguson can maintain a strong but lawful protest that will spill over and make people think about what is wrong with the militarization of law enforcement.

Is this a turning poing for the USA to pull back from the brink, or does it have to get much, much worse first?

I'd love to see these fuckers put down.
But, from what Ferguson riot news I've seen, no serious injuries to protesters/rioters. Sounds like police restraint to me.

Remember this when the boys and girls in blue demand a pay raise etc. Most will retire with full health benefits and the public will end up picking up the tab for these fat fucks.

It's worse with firemen. There's a waiting list years long to get a fireman's gig around here, yet pay/benefits skyrocket. It's insane.Batboy2/75 wrote:Remember this when the boys and girls in blue demand a pay raise etc. Most will retire with full health benefits and the public will end up picking up the tab for these fat fucks.

One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

A side note.
If the USA (and particularly white America) has to come to grips with the fascists police state we have become. Then Black America and their Liberal enablers need to come to terms with the violence and social destruction caused of black America. The image of the violent black didn't spring out of the minds of racists. Blacks are disproportionately responsible for a majority of crime in the USA and most of the social ills. Why? Because they are by and large treated as perpetual victims and wards of the state.

Re: Making po po less militirized
When I read reports of journalists being roughed up, I thought that something could come from it but it's not going to happen yet. People will need an organized, peaceful, legal protest to succeed. Rioters roving the streets sacking small business, throwing molotov cocktails and screaming that they are going to kill the po-lice isn't going to garner widespread support. If anything, they are making a case for why cops sometimes act the way that they do.WildGorillaMan wrote:Is this a turning poing for the USA to pull back from the brink, or does it have to get much, much worse first?

Re: Making po po less militirized
The last 3 Police Chiefs in my old town did the whole "defer salary until last 3 years of job so you get that for your retirement"...one guy is making well over 200K a year with his pension, meanwhile, they've fucked over the rank and file with their pensions.
Re: Making po po less militirized
A separate legal system outside of the civilian one? That's the opposite of what we'd want. If needed, write some laws into the state and local codes. We want more integration, not less.Batboy2/75 wrote: Each Sate establish a LEO version of the UCMJ. Being an LEO entails a lot of power- place officers under a legal system like the UCMJ.
Post-Iraq and Afghanistan, the military has been shedding hardware like crazy. Leaving billions of dollars of stuff overseas, and giving away billions of dollars of arms and vehicles to law enforcement. Hard to say "no" to free stuff, so police folks end up with MRAPs and armor what-not. Useful kit, so its not hard to understand why they have it. But then it ends up being a hammer looking for a nail.
It's all about leadership and community control of the police force.

This. More often than not, most city councils live in the out of sight out of mind mode and don't really care what's happening until after the fact. They defer to their city managers to keep an eye on the department heads.

De-unionize LEO.
There are many frivolous lawsuits against the honest cops that are just doing their jobs, and the union legal protection they get is very important.
If you de-unionize police, then at least set up a substantial legal defense fund.
