Penn State again

Post by Grandpa's Spells »

I see students are chanting Parterno's name again and want their statue and wins back. Some dudes chimed in on Dan John's FB post about PSU talk radio playing victim.

I get if it's just denial, you get whole countries doing that shit. But it's like PSU fans have made this little bubble for themselves, and then decided to get noisy.

Fuck the NCAA. This place should lose its accreditation.

What the fucking fuck is their argument? They should unleash rabid hippos on these assholes.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

That giving a poor black kid's moms a nicer place to live is worse than covering up for and enabling a serial kid fiddler?

If it wasn't videotaped, it doesn't count.

Relative.

You're in that neck of the woods, right? What's the argument they're making? Genuinely curious.

They can't be happy about the loss of revenue. Penn State used to have one of the most profitable football programs in the country.

It is full-on raging battle royale. Central Pennsylvania gothic.

The Paterno defenders and ilk have managed to capture the 9 alumni-elected seats on the Board of Trustees (the guys that fired Paterno) and are out for blood, making full use of the bully pulpit it offers. Big bucks donors including dissident BOT members funding a lawsuit by the Paternos against the NCAA and Penn State, and funding a lawsuit against Freeh by Spanier for defamation. Jay Paterno is suing Penn State for $1M because he feels he didn't get the severance package traditionally provided (maybe) and that the false acceptance of the Freeh Report resulted in his reputation being sullied so now he can't get a head coaching job at a D-1 school. This, after being a shitty quarterback coach who got his job through nepotism.

A guy named Ryan Bagwell has become in expert in sunshine laws and is filing to get public access to everything possible. One thing learned is that there is an ongoing federal investigation and FBI investigation, and that Paterno was a primary target at least at one point.

New school President is in the position of having to walk a very narrow tightrope.

At some point the three administrator's criminal trial will finally kick off. That is surrounded by controversy, as they attended their Grand Jury testimony with a Penn State lawyer who later provided damaging testimony of their own. Who was she representing? Nobody expected the Penn State employees to be lying. Note to self: always hire your own lawyer.

At the core is huge emotional attachment to Joe Paterno. That's not fading away anytime soon.

Yeah, I took a few minutes to look at a Paterno support website. They try to poke holes in "the media narrative." Long points about how McQuerey didn't really see actual buggery taking place (irrelevant, buggery was going on), the victim in that instance denies it took place that day (irrelevant to the larger pattern of molestation), didn't inform Paterno of the degree of what he did see (irrelevant, Paterno knew for years), and Paterno wasn't Sandusky's actual boss at the time (so he shouldn't have done anything?). They're insane.

You even see these people shouting "Read the Freeh report!" when the Freeh report is absolutely damning for Paterno.

These assholes are going to try very, very hard to rewrite history.

One of the "benefits" of the internet is that it supports intellectual circle jerks like these, where they end up quoting each other as support for their assertions.
