Persecution and violence against those who do not share one's particular worldview is at the root of the problem. Whether it comes from those who worship mythical sky fathers, or those that only believe in materialism and science is irrelevant.

Now, the fact that Islam's core tenets includes "bend to Allah or suffer the ass raping consequences" puts that particular gutter religion in a uniquely heinous position. In that aspect, it's like any other religion...anything that can't withstand five minutes of critical analysis has to be stapled to consensus reality with unquestionable rules and consequences for non-compliance. Islam just happens to take it all the way to 11 as opposed to its more benign forerunners of Judaism and Christianity. To be fair, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and state sponsored Secular Humanism attracts its fair share of bonafide crazies who ain't skeered to bomb an abortion clinic or send gentle souls off to work themselves to death in collective farms. As far as Islam, crazy and low IQ seems to be the price of admission...more of a requirement than a nice to have.
