The school had been ranked 241st in the state of 328 schools in 2012, after being ranked 232nd in 2010 out of 322 schools listed.

The football team won the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III state sectional championship in 1997 and the Central Jersey Group IV title in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The decorated career of the coach, George Najjar, in his 20th year at Sayreville and a recent inductee into the New Jersey Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, has come under scrutiny, as have the members of his staff, three of whom have teamed with Mr. Najjar for more than 10 years.

They built a perennial contender, with 18 consecutive New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association playoff appearances, a proud fan base and an active booster club, the Sayreville Touchdown Club, which earned more than $244,000 through merchandise sales and donations from 2008 to 2012, according to tax documents.

Parents complained that canceling the season would hurt players who have bet their futures on football.

Allegations that members of the Sayreville High School football team subjected freshman players to anal penetration bear an eerie resemblance to dozens of cases around the country.

In New York City, coaches were fired after accusations that three members of the track team assaulted younger teammates, with one reportedly saying, "You need a good fingering, you freshman.”

School officials on Thursday canceled the remaining two football games at a suburban Philadelphia high school after concluding rookie players had been subjected to "humiliating and inappropriate" initiation rites.

"I want to be clear that these activities did not result in physical harm, but were not harmless," he said.

All varsity and junior varsity coaches were also suspended pending further investigation, the superintendent said, citing the failure of staff to properly supervise team activities. Police said they would investigate whether any of the activity was criminal.

Central Bucks Regional Police Department Chief James Donnelly said the school's principal had told him that one of the initiation rites involved placing towels over players' heads and leading them into the shower. He said players referred to the practice as "waterboarding," but that he didn't consider fit the definition. Waterboarding is a form of torture in which water is poured over a cloth placed on a victim's face to simulate drowning.
