ST. LOUIS (CNN) —A woman appears to have accidentally fatally shot herself in the head with a gun bought to prepare for possible Ferguson-related unrest, according to sources briefed on the police investigation.

The shooting occurred Friday night in downtown St. Louis, the city's Metropolitan Police Department said, in an area dominated by vacant lots beside a football stadium.

The female victim, identified in a police report as Becca Campbell, 26, was a passenger in a car involved in an auto accident. Her 33-year-old boyfriend was driving, the sources told CNN.

The boyfriend, who wasn't identified, told police that the couple had bought a gun because of fears of unrest related to the pending grand jury decision on the shooting of Michael Brown, the sources said.

He told investigators that as they drove late Friday night, the victim waved a gun, jokingly saying the couple were ready for Ferguson, the sources said.

He ducked to get out of the way of the gun and accidentally rear-ended another car. He said the accident caused the gun to go off and she was struck by a bullet in the head, the sources said.

The victim was rushed to a hospital but died.

The investigation is continuing because police want to be sure the story as told by the boyfriend is correct, the sources said. Police are awaiting gun trace results, as part of the ongoing investigation.

Punk tried to prevent the cop from getting out and attacked the cop ANYONE does that, they stand a great chance of eating a bullet, even more so if your a near 300# suspect in a violent crime. the cop showed more restraint than he should have.

Now I sit back and watch the "Shit's On Fire Show" as the Orcs riot for justice while stealing, assaulting, burning and shooting.

I hope we watch them get mowed down. The cops should have hardcore gear for cases like this. I don't like them SWATing up to serve search warrants on non violent offenders or riding around town like they are patrolling Anbar but when Orcs act like animals, then bring out the armoured vehicles, the M-4s and fucking kill some fucks who refuse to disperse.

Brown's cousin, Pruitt was interviewed live and remotely from Cali. He was far more articulate and sensible than the Brown family attorney, that is for sure.

That DA got fairly granular during the announcement. Apparently, the witness accounts were conflicted enough to keep the GJ from indicting on any charge...he even went as far as stating that black witnesses testified he was charging. Frankly, IMO, it must have been pretty obvious that was the case for them to not come back with anything. It's not that he shot at Brown, it's the number of shots at Brown in that situation that I can't get my head around.

A 300# asshole can be hard to kill with a pistol. I wonder what calibre it was?

There are no rounds in the back of Brown, you shoot until the threat stops.

That and you know how piss poor many cops shoot. Going to the range 2-5 times a year does not make for good center mass and head shooting.

Look at how many rounds members of your old dept. have had to put into people before? Loose Bedspring, I mean Bruce Springsteen wrote a song about 41 shots.

Pig pull triggers on Glocks don't make for less rounds fired, they make for more as accuracy suffers the stiffer your trigger. When you don't hit good, more rounds might be fired and so on.

300# asshole brings an interesting point....homie was probably taking advantage of mousy bearing. Bigger/stronger looking cops tend to not get fucked with as much as smaller cops and female cops. But that's a whole other elephant in a different room.

Badge that says I'm from the system and a gun on their side should be enough to give the same attitude to a small cop as a big cop. I don't "yes sir, no sir" because I worry about a cop's hand to hand skills ( I've dominated enough of them on the mats to know a good number of them can't fight for shit or at least I'm a match for them)

I worry about the weight of the law, his back up, getting shot and the fact that if I took Officer Little Cunt out, the whole department would be out to shoot me on sight, at the very least give me a club party and then the system would give me a new residence in Oz.

What is shooting center of mass supposed to do? Besides being possibly easier to get rounds in to them?

These days you could gut shoot with a reasonable expectation of hitting them and that their life can be saved if they get medical help quickly.

Center of mass is the area where the lungs, heart and diaphragm are as well as with more penetrating rounds having a decent possibility of hitting the spine and causing de-animation. Pretty good expectation that the guy is going down and probably going to die.

I've been told that's a newer thing with the Marines using 5.56, a bullet that tends to go through people and not give a lot of shock. They go for the center line of a forward facing Jawa in hopes of getting a spinal hit and de-animating a target. At least hat's what a Marine I know who has done that said when we were discussing 5.56, 6.8 and 7.62 x 51.

It's hard for me to separate my experience with the cops in St. Louis, who were openly racist in the late 90's. People wonder why there weren't more black folks looking to join that force, but I don't.

I can appreciate that black residents in the neighborhood might testify incorrectly or falsely. The white contractors who were filmed visibly angry at the scene seemed completely credible.

Given that unjust shootings of unarmed black men by white cops is not exactly unheard of, and the witnesses involved, it seemed like it was at least a likely scenario here. Non-LE people rushing to the cop's defense seemed, in nearly every case, to just-so-happen-to also hate black people.
