rosebud . . . no more

Post by dead man walking »

. . . faced with the potential bill from sledding injuries, some cities have opted to close hills rather than risk large liability claims.

No one tracks how many cities have banned or limited sledding, but the list grows every year. One of the latest is in Dubuque, Iowa, where the City Council is moving ahead with a plan to ban sledding in all but two of its 50 parks. . . .

A study by Columbus, Ohio-based Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital found that between 1997 and 2007, more than 20,000 children each year were treated at emergency rooms for sledding-related injuries.

In meetings leading up to the ban, Dubuque council members lamented the move but said it was the only responsible choice given liability concerns and demands from the city's insurance carrier. They pointed to judgments in sledding lawsuits in the past decade, such as a $2 million judgment against Omaha, Nebraska, after a 5-year-old girl was paralyzed when she hit a tree and a $2.75 million payment when a man in Sioux City, Iowa, slid into a sign and injured his spinal cord.

Where we grew up in snowy Pa., comparing childhood sledding injuries was a badge of honor. One of my buddies had a hedge limb completely pierce his cheek. He still bears the scar.

I don't remember ever considering suing the city for sledding injuries. I wonder what the statute of limitations is on this sort of thing.

I have been run over by a snowmobile and the runner sled with two of my friends on it...does that count. Just some gnarly bruises though

At ski areas that have tube parks, they typically generate as much business for the ski patrol as the slopes do. No helmet, head first on a bouncy springy tube, face inches from the icy face grater...heh

My friend broke my toboggan and got a concussion hitting the foot bridge. I'm just glad we didn't have to pull him out of the river.

This is crazy, just one more reason for kids to stay inside and spend all their time on small electronic gadgets.

Pretty sure we're talking snow sledding, not whatever perverted coitus exhibition you're hinting at.

Oh fuck...sledding injuries. I remember conning my two boys to get on the sled together one laying on top of the other, and head down the side of the hill that had a small lip at the end that would allow you to grab some air. Holy shit the kids hit that lip and shot off that sled like a couple of missles fired off an F-14. I fucking laught my ass off. They were pretty tore up but no broken bones. Their mom was fucking furious with me and the kids were extremely unhappy with me as well. To make up for it I said I'd go down it. Man shit moves fast when your face is six inches off the deck. I hit the lip of that base and held on to the sled...I may have grabbed about 6 feet of air and when the sled landed my face planted right into it. I thought I broke my nose. I rolled off that sled and blood was everywhere on my face and jacket and the kids were fucking howling with laughter. Little bastages. But we were even. Good times. That same evening to start things off I conned their mom into riding off on the other side of the hill where there was a small creek hoping that she'd pitch off in it and she did so that started off the whole thing.

You have to wax your sled to keep it lubricated and slippery.
