In a museum about slavery in the Bahamas a few years back, I was surprised at how extensive slavery had been throughout the world (and continued to be). Basically, virtually every culture has had slaves of some sort. They said the biggest misunderstanding about slavery was that it was somehow confined to the US south when something like 10x as many slaves went to both South America and the West Indes.

Toured some Louisiana plantations in March. Was completely shocked to discover that there were free blacks who owned slaves in that state.

A black tour bus driver said there is still resentment over this between darker blacks and lighter skin blacks in the area.
