Apple, why you do me like this?

Post by DrDonkeyLove »

I downloaded Yosemite and now my Macbook Air runs super hot. Fan goes on all the time and battery life is shit.

I think I killed the resource heavy Fire Vault. I looked at my activity monitor and see that Chrome and/or Safari are having a massive energy impact compared to other things. I really don't know what the numbers specifically mean but I talked to my company IT guy about it and he told me to go with Chrome vs. Safari. That has't made a difference.

Sometimes I need to go for hours on battery power and my laptop has been great until now.

Any Ideas?

I'm not really geeky so take this for what it's worth. Keeping a lot of tabs open in any browser is a drain, it keeps everything in cache. At a minimum quit your ram intensive programs every so often, and reboot the whole rig every couple of days.

Might also want to try a program (or similar) called memory clean. It flushes the cache and frees up ram, but the cache is just gonna fillu up again quicky.

How much ram do you have? I have 16 gigs. Plenty for web and email, etc. But throw Photoshop and some ram hogs in the mix and it's used up quickly.

FWIW, porn is a huge ram hog.

The firmware the kernel uses for the fan is probably borked, and the OS may be having trouble with the browser as well. Take that fucking thing to the (Cr)Apple Store and let one of their "Geniuses" look at it.

Also, I feel your pain. My MacBook continually disappoints me these days. Engineered obsolescence. Fuck (Cr)Apple in the neck with a Phillips head screwdriver.

When Yosemite first came out, Chrome really slowed things down. They actually design the damn thing to use a ton of RAM so the obvious solution would be to add more RAM. I didn't and simply used Safari which worked fine (I tried out Firefox and it was fine as well.). However since 10.10.3 came out a few months ago, I've noticed that Chrome is usable again as long as I don't have that many tabs open. If another browser doesn't speed things up, be sure you are up to date on your OSX.
