Knowledge about the day to day existence of the gays (and our more athletically inclined fellow citizens) is not something I seek out.

But it seems irreconcilable with the personal grooming and generally finicky nature of the gays I know of.

When I go to Cabela's etc is it all crypto-queers in the camping dept?

None of my gay friends ever talk about camping. I think that's for closeted married guys. From what I know, Someone else whose name I won't mention has expertise in that area.
All my gays go to Cherry Grove or Fire Island Pines in the summer. They're all out, though.

I think I would be like going camping honey and then fly to the nearest gay orgy spot.

I know one gay who likes to take photos of landscapes but that dude rolls out there in lux and I guarantee he isn't spending the night in a fucking tent.

One of my training partners is a total muscle bear. Decently strongi dude (585 raw sq/385 bench/645 pull) he went camping last summer with a whole other group of The Gays. The route was in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of the North Cascades. They chose a daunting route route than included several short pitches of 5.4 climbing and many sections that gained something like a 1000 feet of elevation per mile. He spent 8 weeks training for it and probably bought about $2500 in gear. The hike was 10 days long.

So no. in my limited experience, they don't go camping, they make a fukn production out of everything.
