Re: Right now I'm reading
Man, I've read zero fiction in the last year, at least. I need to remedy that as I used to be good for a few books per month......
Quick Story: not sure if "Book of the Month Club" still exists, but this was back when we still got hard-cut checks in the Marines when Thomas Harris put out "Silence of the Lambs" to levelset how far back I am going.....I swear I might have gotten-up twice when I read that book (hardcover) and passed around my barracks.....don't know how many dudes read that book in a month's time, but everyone was hooked and this was years before the movie.
I will look into some of the titles that have been mentioned. Thanks for resurrecting the thread.

Re: Right now I'm reading
Just about to finish the first Harry Potter book (reading it to my daughter at night). We both love it.
Reading The Crossing by Michael Connelly for myself. I'm a Connelly fan, he's done a great job of developing his characters.

Yes, I read to my kids at least 5 nights per week....or they read to me. Good for you David, but I am unsurprised, coming from you. Watching them figure stories out, answering questions, letting them learn new words, beats the ever living shit out of "The Voice" or whatever.

The Coming of the Reich, the first of Richard Evans trilogy on the Nazis.
audiobook of In The Garden of the Beasts about William Dodd (first US ambassador to the Nazis) and his family

I have Amazon Audible and love it, but all non-fiction. For whatever reason, I like to actually read non-fiction whereas I am fine listening to non-fiction.

Thanks, not surprised at you, either. I'm very aware that my youngest will grow out of me reading to her in the next year and a half, so I'm making the most of it.The Venerable Bogatir X wrote:Yes, I read to my kids at least 5 nights per week....or they read to me. By the way, I highly recommend the Gregor series by Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games author). The books are written for kids but they are entertaining and engaging for adults. I looked forward both to the quality time with my daughter and the story every night. There are five of them I think and they are all suspenseful page turners.

Same, I can't concentrate enough on fiction, where I'm okay missing the odd word or sentence in most non-.The Venerable Bogatir X wrote:I have Amazon Audible and love it, but all non-fiction. For whatever reason, I like to actually read non-fiction whereas I am fine listening to non-fiction.
One exception - World War Z. The only decent zombie-related fiction in this current craze, the audiobook is closer to a radio play and it's fantastic.
Re: Right now I'm reading
I read to my son frequently. We're reading the second book in The Eighth Day series right now. Kind of Percy Jackson-ish. Not bad!
Personally, I'm reading "The Power of the Dog", same author as "The Cartel" (which I read first, but is a sequel to this one) - pretty entertaining.

Just read Zen Physics. Very good book front to back. He dives into areas usually owned by new agers but does so without any woo or grand claims. Refreshing and a wonderful rumination on death, if you like that sort of thing.

Re: Right now I'm reading

I found this book by accident via a website that I stumbled upon by accident.
Essentially it's about situational awareness and cues used by Marines in the combat hunter program to get ahead of situations before things get violent aka left of bang. It's interesting on a few levels:
1) It's relatively short and simple.
2) It's interesting to see how Marines use this program in surveillance/combat situations.
3) It's very applicable to personal security.
4) If you stretch the concepts you can apply them in all kinds of personal interaction from business meetings to family interactions to driving.
It actually came in handy last week as my old white ass was mistakenly and foolishly walking the streets of Inglewood, CA solo.

I am reading Kafka on the Shore, having recently read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, both by Haruki Murakami. Love his writing - like staring at normal life through a slightly distorted funhouse mirror. Even the small things become interesting.

Downloaded huge pack of Harold Lamb's books.
I already read his about Tamerlan and ChengisKhan. Didn't knew he also wrote adventure books.

I picked this up. I kind expected the east west philosophy discussion but didn't expect to learn as much about the brain as I did. Consciousness is existence, existence is consciousness? We're all jewels in Indra's net reflecting the unity of the great nothing/everything?buckethead wrote:Just read Zen Physics. Very good book front to back. As per usual, I came away with more questions than answers but that's nothing new. An interesting read.

Reading "Bloodlands Europe between Hitler and Stalin" by Timothy Snyder.
Kind of like a condensed version of the three volumes of "Gulag Archipelago" without the gallows humor.
One thing for sure, only thing worse to be in Europe than a Jew was a Pole. Poles got killed and harassed by both the Nazis and the Soviets.

I've read a lot of Bukowski and those are my two favorites. Women and Pulp are both good, but not on the same level in my opinion. Pulp is fiction, maybe his only fiction story.Sangoma wrote:Just read Ham on Rye and Post Office by Charles Bukowski. Late discovery.
Working my way through the Dresden files. Wizard/Private Eye story. The wizard part is the weaker side of the story, but he's an entertaining protagonist.

How far in are you Bram? They get progressively better as he goes along. The whole 90# woman aikidoing giant men makes my balls ache but I get past it. One of my favorite easy reads.
