Skating again

Post by tough old man »

So I started skateboarding again. Mini ramps and a little vert. I am very sore.

Good for you man!

Being a skater was my entire identity for a lot of years. I had a career ending injury (shattered heel) in 2001. After the ankle fusion to fix the resulting arthritis, I no longer have lateral flexion (if that's what you call it, the way your ankle bends when you Ollie) of my lead foot. I was never much of a "park skater", I was one those assholes who terrorizes downtown with a back pack full of beers. Last year a guy I used to skate with hit me up on FB and I've gone out and cruised around some of the local parks about 10 times since.

Skate or die, bro!!

About 10 years ago I found Bulldog Skates. Wes Humpston is the guy who did all of the Zboys artwork. Cool retro art on the old 10,11, 12 inch and some eight wheeler designs..I have a small collection of them .I tried getting back into skating .I soon found that I didn't love it like I did as a kid. Law of diminishing returns kind of thing. I have a few old skateboarder mags laying around .Rode a Sims Andrecht ,Indy 169s with conical Gyro's. I sucked then and as a middle aged dude? If I didn't have on a helmet my last session out in a small park ,I sure as hell wouldn't be writing this.

Admirable.

I was luke warm at best. One of my friends from NYC that is still an active FB BFF is still at it and has mentored his kids into it, too. Yep, he's also pushing 50.

One of my fondest (in hindsight) memories of skateboarding was back in Virginia Beach, where they had built a soapbox derby track onto Mt Trashmore, the former dump turned park. I used to go up there, hop on my homemade board made out of a chunk of plywood with sandpaper glued to the top and with some of the first urethane wheels on it, and get into a tuck and do speed runs.

So once at peak Mach, I got into a speed wobble and did about 5 ever more diverging oscillations before blowing off and landing on my feet. Unable to run at 20 mph, I just balled it up and rolled it out on the asphalt. Thank god it was November and I was wearing jeans and a thick coat. Also, no one to witness it. At 14, that was most important. No helmet or any of that shit, of course.

They tore out the track long time ago. Memories lost.

I grew up a farm kid and missed out on the first wave of this. When I was in the crotch guys would break out some boards and I always thought it was cool but never gave it a try...I knew I would bust my ass good.

I skated a vert contest at Trashmore. We played tackle football after in the rain. Every scratch got infected from ground water seepage.
Went to a local street park and had a blast.

Before they had the good skate park, they had this asphalt abomination that immediately started slumping in the heat of the sun. Did you ever skate that thing?

I picked up a Joel Tudor Sector 9 board a few years ago, I commute on it every once in a while or go try and carve hills when the surfs flat.

Skating is one or my favorite things to do. And parks look amazing to experience, that's awesome that you have the skill to use them.

Did you ever go to the Ocean Beach one in San Diego?

?
I can't even start to describe how stupid longboards are for anyone who isn't a female Asian college student.

Edit: I understand this board is mostly dedicated to strength sports, but fuck....you can't shit on TOM starting to skate again by bringing up LONGBOARDS! That's like me shitting up one of PL54s threads with advice on how I went from a 225 squat to 275!
