It's kind of a ho-ley shit moment for the apologists, with the release of the grand jury testimony of Penn State's legal counsel.

If you're into legal stuff, I imagine it is pretty interesting. Former State Supreme Court judge, now counsel to Penn State, attends grand jury testimony of PSU employees since the matter affects PSU, sees that they are no longer acting in line with their employment at PSU (sees them lying), gets subpoena-ed herself, can only talk about stuff that doesn't violate attorney-client privilege, blah, blah, blah.

Now the judge has to decide if either her testimony is barred because of atty-client privilege, or their testimony is barred because they should she worked for them instead of PSU, or both.

Lots of frothing locally.

So
- while the Paterno family has expanded their suit to include Penn State as a plaintiff
- and the administrators' trial approaches
- and a bunch of alumni are doing a kick starter to put up a privately funded statue of Paterno in town which has the forces of love and hate manning the battlements
- our new football coach from Vanderbilt has allegations that he'd gotten one the rape victims there to get some hot coeds together to run an escort service for recruits, then contacted her after she'd been raped
- our new President is coming from FSU, where the QB allegedly raped some chick. Turns out the Seminole Boosters employed the investigating detective at night, and also paid a quarter of the President of the University's salary, $150K/year. The Prez says to let due process work, and the investigator rapes due process in the ass. They win a national championship.

Sports boosters paying a portion of the University President's salary? No conflict of interest there?

I am sure our new coach and Prez are of the highest integrity and on the total up and up, but really. WTF?

Any publicity is good publicity, so they say.

Joe Paterno "probably" should have finished out the 2011 season instead of being fired, outgoing Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett told The Philadelphia Inquirer on Thursday.

"They probably shouldn't have fired him, they probably should've suspended him," Corbett told the Inquirer. "He probably should have been given the last three games, not on the sideline."

ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. reported in June 2013 that Corbett was a central character in the firing of Paterno. Not only did Corbett serve as the state attorney general when police investigated Sandusky in the late 1990s, but he also one of the main voices in the firing of the longtime coach.

"Something not very good happened," Corbett told reporters on Nov. 9, 2012. "We have to ... take the bull by the horns and fix it. Quickly."

One of Penn State's current members on the board of trustees, Anthony Lubrano, wasn't buying Corbett's explanation to the Inquirer.

"It seems rather disingenuous to make that statement, given he made the charge to fire Paterno," Lubrano told ESPN.com. "Frankly, it shows what a poor politician he is. He waited until after the election to admit he made a mistake."

Corbett lost his re-election bid for governor Tuesday. He acknowledged to the Inquirer that his involvement with Penn State "might have been one factor" in losing the race to Tom Wolf.

"You know me, I have to have evidence on everything," Corbett told the Inquirer. "If it was clear [Paterno] understood and did not do anything, yeah. But I'm not sure it was clear to him. And, technically, he complied with the law."

When people get fired, most of the time they were not technically breaking laws.

A Philadelphia judge has ordered the public release of sealed documents from a lawsuit that could reveal details about a claim that a boy told Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in 1976 that Jerry Sandusky had molested him. Judge Gary Glazer said Thursday that the records will be made public in a month, granting the request for access to the filings made by The Associated Press and other news outlets. Glazer disclosed the Paterno-related claim last month when he ruled in a dispute between Penn State and its insurer over payments to those with claims of abuse against former Paterno assistant Sandusky.

He also wrote that the insurer, Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association Insurance Co., had evidence that one assistant coach saw "inappropriate contact" between Sandusky and a child at the university in 1987 and a second "reportedly witnessed sexual contact" between Sandusky and a child the next year.

greg schiano, when an assistant at penn state, saw sandusky and a kid in the shower well before mcqueary did, according to documents.

What does any of this have to do with Penn State, the University? A few degenerates in the sports program doesn't taint the entire institution.

About a third of the colleagues in my department are Penn State alumni. Good solid bunch of people.

In general, the alumni activists have put leaders on the board of trustees who are determined to exonerate JoePa. The Paterno family live right in town, and are still worshipped. At the same time, administrators still have charges against them, which in their defense may require throwing old Joe under the bus. Meanwhile Sandusky seeks a new trial. And then the football alumni want their statue back. By PSU fighting over the insurance payout, what they hoped would be buried beneath NDAs is now getting dumped out in public. Lots of opinions.

But as Gene notes, for most folks it is just background noise. We've got work to do.
