I believe that Trump expressed what he wanted to say and was joking. And when the criticism comes and he realized he goofed he'll play the "I was joking" card, or the "You misinterpreted what I said" card - he probably already has, I haven't been paying attention.

If he had meant the NRA, he's smart enough to say that instead of "2nd Amendment people".
