It was not the most overt call to arms, it was a stupid joke.
For better or worse, though, it's generally not thought to be kosher for one candidate to joke about the death of another candidate. Hillary took a great deal of shit for referencing RFK's assassination as a reason she was staying in in 2008 and she didn't even suggest that as remedy for ills. Me, I think 'vote from the rooftops' jokes are funny.
This will blow over, as all the others do, because Trump will say something crazy tomorrow. The question becomes about whether the constant lying and insanity will just fly over most peoples' heads because it happens so often or if it will continue to drive people away from him. Can you act so batshit that it starts to look normal?
Technically I suppose that's already happened with the ISIS shit, but that's more a case of his inability to speak getting in the way. What he wants to say is that Clinton and Obama's actions led to ISIS taking root, what he manages to get out is OBAMA'S LEADIN ISIS. The former plays well with a lot of people on the conservative spectrum, the latter plays well with the 20% who still aren't too sure about where Obama was born. 20% doesn't win an election.
For all the shit thrown at Dubya for being a room-temperature IQ, he was playing dumb. Trump appears to be legitimately stupid.

And must a candidate trim his remarks so that not even a solitary nutbag could misinterpret?
a president probably wants to be careful with his statements, doncha think. don't want the chinese to get their knickers in a twist, or encourage putin to be adventurous.
earlier you suggested it was an ill-advised remark. why not demand more of our leaders. otherwise we get . . . . well, we all know what we're getting
Really Big Strong Guy: There are a plethora of psychopaths among us.

What we deserve.
