Mrs. Kenny X and I went to visit her mother last Saturday. She told us a weird low-pressure system was developing in Florida that was going to dump a shitload of rain on us later on in the week.
Boy was that a fucking understatement. Holy fucking shit.
It was raining yesterday when we woke up. I didn't pay it any mind, though, because I've been busy with work all week, and all my extra mental energy had been occupied by wondering whether or not Mrs. Kenny X and I had finally hit the jackpot baby-making-wise... Like I said, we've had some challenges. Two weeks ago Friday we did IUI. And thank The Good Lord, it worked!
I wasn't paying attention to much else...
You can understand, I'm sure.
So the fucking Rainpocalypse happens... And it doesn't let up. That storm system drifted West from Florida, and parked its happy ass over Acadiana, and proceeded to dump two feet of rain on us in a damn day and a half.
C'est pas bon, as they say down here on the Bayou.
Last count I saw, 1,500 families had lost their homes.
I've seen news footage of people stranded on the roofs of their homes, being rescued by men in all manner of boats- pirogues, bass boats, airboats... The Vermilion river has risen to all-time record heights. I live real close to the Vermillion River. Heh, last year, in September, I was fishing the Vermillion River at Rotary Point for bass -that's a mile and a half from my house- and slipped on the muddy bank and fell in, nearly drowning (it's hard to swim whenever you're holding your fishing rod, trying not to lose it). Rotary Point was flooded all the way up to the road, last report I saw.
Ruffino's By The River, a place I take Mrs. Kenny X to sometimes for steaks when we don't feel like grilling our own- flooded. So are all the houses across the river from it. Mrs. Kenny X drove by their earlier this evening, on her way to sing at Mass.
Several folks we know have had to evacuate.
Many houses have been destroyed.
While Mrs. Kenny X was singing at mass -she's the Cantor at a local Catholic church- I was at home, worried about if she and Baby X (or Babies X) would make it home safely. I channeled my nervous energy the only way I know how. Cooking. I made a Jambalaya. What the fuck else could I do? Sometimes, when the shit hits the fan, the world in your immediate vicinity is ending, and you know there's nothing you can do about it, all you can do is cook a really good Jambalaya, and drink beer. That's what Kenny X does. But fuck. Kenny X was terrified. I'm still terrified, too, because another storm system is on its way. Should be arriving here in Acadiana by midnight. Motherfucker. Death and displacement from above. But God damn it, fuck you, I'm gonna cook a good Jambalaya and drink some beer, because that's how I roll. When Mrs. Kenny X gets home from mass, our house is gonna smell so good from the celery, onion, and bell pepper simmered in the Tabasco and Lee & Perrins so help me, God.
I'm so glad we moved. Earlier this Summer there was a shooting in my old neighborhood. On my street. A drive-by. We decided then that it was time to start looking. Mrs. Kenny X was on her way to pick up our niece a few days later, and she drove-by this place, saw the "For Rent" sign in the yard, and called the number on the sign right away. It all seemed perfect. Too good to be true, almost. Three weeks later we moved in. We're bone-dry tonight. My old street is impassable. The old neighborhood has been boned since early this morning.
I read a thing on Facebook about a mother and her daughter who got separated during a rescue effort. Her daughter was at a different shelter and she didn't know which one. Oh my God. I can't even imagine. I'm glad that's not us, tonight. I honestly don't know what I'd do if I was in one shelter and Mrs. Kenny X was in a different one. Hopefully she'd have our dog Begonia with her. I can't fathom it. I can't fathom *this*.
It'll be a long time until I've fully processed it.

When the Weather Channel shows up in Bayou Country, it is time to run. You don't want to get on any Ark with a bunch of Cajuns. Because they will shoot at anything edible.
Stay dry. Do not miss that. The jambalaya, oh yea....

First of all - congratulations and best of luck with the baby!!!
Secondly - stay safe. It looks so horrible - can't even imagine. It's like the tsunami without a tsunami.

Thanks Boris!
And here's some good news- the sun has been shining over Acadiana today and the Vermillion River is falling, again. Hopefully it'll be back to normal soon. Meanwhile, life here at least where I am, is back to normal.
